Lot 233 Maipo Valley Chile Cabernet Sauvignon 2008

Winemaker's Notes:

Notes: Beautiful Dark Crimson with ruby rim. This wine is a densely packed smorgasbord of smoky cassis and menthol. The structure is rich and fruity, yet balanced with an unapologetic menthol/mint component that is seamlessly integrated into the wine. With a strong aromatic voice and dynamite mouthfeel, this wine boasts a long, unique finish. Cameron Confidential: A very unique (in this day and age) Cabernet experience. Sourced from a spectacular winery estate in the Maipo Valley (who produced some of the best wine we tasted in Chile), this wine has about two years in bottle and was purchased as a shiner (bottled wine, no label). Meticulously hand-crafted to reflect the gravelly, rocky, loamy soils from whence it sprang, this Cabernet is a brash and bold statement about the craft of Chilean winemaking. What Napa has worked so hard to eliminate in much of their wine, the Chilean’s have embraced with the end result being a vastly more interesting wine. With a strong aromatic voice and dynamite mouthfeel, this wine is as it should be and it is delicious.

Be very careful in buying this wine. It smells & tastes strongly of menthol, so much so that it reminded me of cough syrup. The menthol/mint taste is overwhelming, even after decanting for 2 hours. I tried it again on night 2, and the menthol smell & taste had diminished somewhat, but only enough so that the rough edges of the Cabernet taste began to emerge. I threw the rest away, and personally do not believe more time in the bottle will smooth out the deficiencies of this wine. It is a Cameron Hughes labeling of the Chilean winery Haras de Pirque bottled Cabernet Sauvignon, and is not up to the usual Cameron Hughes wines.
