Leeuwin Estate Shiraz Margaret River Siblings 2008

Editorial Review by Gregory Dal Piaz:

Lovely on the nose with earth, vanilla, dried meat and cracked peppercorn notes all framing the core of liquory reds fruits. Cool on entry, this is rich and ripe but clear on the palate, delivering a mouthful of cherry fruit with spiced edges. There’s some oak here, but it plays a supporting role, adding a base of fine tannins along with the layer of spice notes. The finish reveals more oak tannins, but at the same time, there is really appealing fresh red fruit. Still youthful but drinking very well. 89 pts

After an extensive search in 1972 to identify the most suitable Australian area for the production of premium varietal wines, Robert Mondavi singled out a small plot of land in the Margaret River region. At the time a cattle farm, Leeuwin Estate evolved under the direction of owners Denis and Tricia Horgan, with Mondavi acting as consultant and mentor. The Estate was thrust into the international spotlight when Decanter magazine awarded their highest recommendation to the 1980 Art Series Chardonnay. Now under the direction of two generations of the founding family, the Estate is recognized as one of Australia’s leading wine producers and wine tourism pioneers. Featured three times in the prestigious category of “International Winery of the Year” by U.S. Wine & Spirits magazine, Leeuwin Estate wines nconsistently rank alongside the world’s finest. Read less
Suggested Recipe Pairing presented by
Layered Rice Pudding

RiceSelect's fragrant Jasmati® is blended with eggs, milk and fall's favorite spices, cinnamon and nutmeg, to create a delicious rice pudding, which is layered on top of fluffy cream cheese and abuttery pecan crust. Pairs well with a bold, tawny port with flavors of dried fruits, nuts, and spices.

This is bright and fruity on the nose with notes of blueberry and black currant lifted by subtle notes of smoke and spice. In the mouth it's fairly soft and resolved with a deep, round, smooth core of fruit but lacks a bit of complexity and detail. The finish is decidedly fun and fruity yet the wine shows good balance and is ultimately a restrained style of fruit bomb. 87pts

Jammy mulberry fruits at first then quite herbal and floral with farmyard drying grass, hay, touch of leather, meadow, earth, and minor smoky toast note. Really well balanced in the mouth with good weight without it feel fat or forced, really lovely mouthfeel with spice, and mineral tones balanced by soil and dusty earth notes that add complexity to the sour cherry fruit. Soft, integrated acids, perfect tannin balance, touch of vanilla and wild cherry /bitter cherry candy on the moderately long. Fun with zesty fruit if a bit atypical. 90pts

Bright, tart berries that has a bit of a grape hard candy sweetness, with some earthiness and purple flower aroma. Very pleasant.

A classic medium-bodied shiraz with delicate ripe plum and blackberry fruits that carry onto the palate. A lovely structured wine with lingering sweet fruit which helps provide the wine with good length.

Wine Tasting NotesThis wine is crimson ruby red in color. The lifted nose has dark cherry and chocolate flavors with some white pepper notes - rich and generous with a hint of fine French oak. On the medium weight palate there is peppery spice at the start leading into rich blackberry and dark cherry spectrum with soft, fine tannins providing good length.
