Le Pupille Solalto 2005

Winemaker's Notes:

This estate has now joined the ranks of Tuscan superstars. Elisabetta Geppetti has injected a great deal of dynamism into Le Pupille’s wines in the past few vintages, yet has been careful to look after the detail as well. In addition to Morellino di Scansano, Le Pupille has also been expending considerable effort in producing two of Italy’s great red wines, including the outstanding single vineyard Morellino, Poggio Valente. It was Elisabetta’s dream to create in Maremma a wine sweetened by noble rot like Sauternes and this became reality in 1990. Solalto is made from late-harvested Traminer, Sauvignon and Semillon grapes, which are allowed to shrivel on the vine and are picked in November, from 5 hectares of south-east facing vineyards, 200 metres above sea level, in Scansano. The soil is predominantly sandy, rich in stones and sandstones. The vines are cordon spur trained at a density of 4,000 vines per hectare. This sweet wine is deep amber/gold in colour this wine is lusciously sweet with aromas of dried apricots, honey, marmalade and sweet spices. Not at all cloying on the palate due to the Sauvignon portion which gives this wine its good acidity and zesty lightness.
