Las Rocas Garnacha VV 2006

Winemaker's Notes:

Bodegas San Alejandro is a co-operative with 1200 hectares of vineyard in Calatayud, 87 km southwest of Zaragoz in Aragon. The vineyards and long growing season in this area attracted French consultant Jean-Michel Lafage and his team (of Ch St Roch) and they were so impressed by the quality of the fruit coming into this co-op from its 350 growers, that they decided to develop their own brand, Las Rocas. The quality of their Garnacha is particularly high here and accounts for over 50% of their production. This 100% Garnacha is deep ruby in colour with spicy blueberry perfumes on the nose giving way to a rich, supple palate with intense blueberry and blackberry fruit characters. The oak rounds out the fruit, and gives the wine a delicious vanilla and cinnamon edge.

At the centre of its urban neighbourhood rises the church of San Pedro Apóstol made in the mudejar style, which it lies next to the exceptional communal Tower in the gothic style and built using cut-stone masonry. At the beginning of the 17th century, the mudejar-style Convent of the Reverendas Concepcionistas Franciscanas was built, where the remainders of San Alejandro currently remain in honour of whom the main town festivities are held from the 12th to the 16th of May. Nose immediately says Spanish Garnacha. Pepper, berry and full. Color is dark ruby, slightly turning brick red now. First taste is loaded with cherries, white pepper, and lemon acidity. Great food wine and value. Old vine Garnacha at possibly its best for the money.

I attended a wine tasting featuring four Las Rocas Garnachas last week. I was given a bottle of 2009 Garnacha to take home. I can definitely say I will buy this wine in the future. The nose is full of spice and berries. It has a rich flavor, full of pepper and red fruit, with a lingering nutty oakiness. Very nice.

"Good red-ruby. Perfumed aromas of liqueur-like dark berries and black cherry, licorice and spicy oak. Smooth, ripe, fat and full, with an enticing dark cherry flavor. This is wonderfully lush and pliant for a red wine under $10. Finishes with big, mouthdusting tannins and lingering sweetness. Exceptional value." -90pts International Wine Cellar
