Laphroaig Single Malt Scotch Whisky 2010

Winemaker's Notes:

Laphroaig Quarter Cask is handcrafted to deliver a new expression of Laphroaig\'s powerful, smoky flavors with smoother, creamier and more complex notes. Laphroaig Quarter Cask is initially matured in American Oak bourbon barrels, and then is transferred into new, specially produced Quarter Casks for a final seven- to eight- month period. As a result, the maturing spirit receives 30% more contact with wood than other single malts aged in larger, more commonly used barrels. The additional wood influence imparts a very special character to the spirit. The result is a single malt with the unmistakable peat smoke that is so unique to Laphroaig, and a creamy, coconut-like nose with a soft sweetness, a hint of salt.

\ The first nosings find clean, apple peel-like and peat-free scents; later inhalations find a more sea breeze like, mildly briny character. Palate entry is lean, earthy, moderately smoky and lemony; midpalate is oily with flavors of ash, peat, sweet malt and brine. Concludes sweet, peaty and cigarette ash-like, with a bite of green olive.\

A vibrant young Laphroaig whose maturation has been speeded up by ageing in Quarter Casks. This shows soft sweetness and a velvety feel when first tasted, then the intense peatiness so unique to Laphroaig comes bursting through. A really terrific whisky and great value.

New to the Laphroaig lineup is the Quarter Cask, a special bottling that ages their spirit in a barrel one-quarter the size of their normal casks to create more contact between the whisky and the wood. The classic fire, spice and exhaust pipe peat reek is still there but now layered with vanilla and honey notes. Great for the newcomers to Islay as well as the old pros.
