Kosta Browne Pinot Noir Russian River Valley 4 Barrel 2008

Winemaker's Notes:

Wine Tasting Notes Aromatics: Wild raspberry, lavender and soft notes of sarsaparilla. Layers of warm spices compete for attention with the rich berry and crushed ripe cherries. On the palate: This vintage of the Russian River Valley Pinot Noir permeates and awakens your senses. Pure, balanced and intense. Raspberry and a trace of nutmeg envelop the midpalate. The intense flavors build to a crescendo of dark red fruit, nuances of spice and traces of cola which slowly saturate the back palate. Traces of cream, bright/rich cherry and dark chocolate are revealed in the long, caressing and mouth filling finish.

Flavorful, intense wines - that is our goal. We believe every wine should be bursting with flavor. This intensity should be part of a greater balance. We find that each of our vineyards has its own "sweet spot" of balance. It is our charge to guide each vineyard to its optimum flavor potential. Our single vineyard wines are blended to express the specific qualities and consistencies of our pedigreed vineyards. Pinot Noir is the perfect palate to define the terroir of these plantings. We offer two appellation wines: our Sonoma Coast and Russian River. These wines are blended to represent the best of our vineyards in each specific appellation. Quality is of utmost importance with these blends. Read less
Suggested Recipe Pairing presented by
Layered Rice Pudding

RiceSelect's fragrant Jasmati® is blended with eggs, milk and fall's favorite spices, cinnamon and nutmeg, to create a delicious rice pudding, which is layered on top of fluffy cream cheese and abuttery pecan crust. Pairs well with a bold, tawny port with flavors of dried fruits, nuts, and spices.

Dark and dense. Flavors of cherries, plum, vanilla and cola. Finishes with some white pepper.

I dont usually like california pinots but with that said this was great. Ripe strawberries, rasberries, cherries, with notes of spice. Great body and sweet tannins. The best of the best from CA

Kosta Browne never disappoints. This is one of my favorite Pinot Noirs and I love my Pinot. I'm no expert but I love their Pinots and I pick as many bottles as I can every year. You have to get on their waiting list to get these exclusive, incredible wines.

Rating: 90/100 - As reviewed by Connoisseurs' Guide to California Wine (www.cgcw.com) in the October 2010 issue. Varietally atypical touches of mint lend a different twist to this very rich, lavishly oaked Pinot, but beneath all of its sweet spice lies a wealth of very pure and impressively concentrated ripe-cherry fruit that takes center stage early and powers past a slight catch of heat at the finish. There is so much to like now that we question what might come with keeping, but even if improvement is not in its cards, the wine will hold well for a half-dozen years.Connoisseurs' Guide to California Wine aging recommendation: Drinkable now. Further bottle aging can improve this wine.

Rating: 93/100 - As reviewed by Connoisseurs' Guide to California Wine (www.cgcw.com) in the October 2010 issue. Vying for top honors among Kosta Browne's vineyard-designate Pinot Noirs from 2008, the deep, optimally ripened Gap's Crown Vineyard bottling is noteworthy for both its richness and real layering. It is wonderfully supple with the velvety feel found only in the best varietal offerings, and, while never lacking in muscle and size, it shows amazing balance and grace. It is long on immediate appeal to be sure, but it will only get better and more complex if allowed to age, and it may not reach it best for five or six years.Connoisseurs' Guide to California Wine aging recommendation: Drinkable now. Further bottle aging can improve this wine.

Rating: 92/100 - As reviewed by Connoisseurs' Guide to California Wine (www.cgcw.com) in the October 2010 issue. If on the one hand leaning a bit more to ripeness than some in its clan, this big and very outgoing wine is not one for excess, and its abundant, mildly chocolaty, sweet-cherry fruit is matched by a fine sense of structure with ample acidity and balanced tannins providing a fine spine. Its very long fruity finish may take on a slight pucker, but this bottling ranks with the more ageworthy Pinots of the Kosta Browne lot, and it has a most promising future.Connoisseurs' Guide to California Wine aging recommendation: Cellar for future drinking. Wine will improve with bottle aging.

Rating: 94/100 - As reviewed by Connoisseurs' Guide to California Wine (www.cgcw.com) in the October 2010 issue. This stunning wine reaffirms our belief that Kosta Browne manages to capture as much pure and precise Pinot Noir fruit as any producer we know, and it does so while showing a great deal of polish. It is ripe but never overly so, and it is structured without being stiff. Its keen balance and slightly velvety feel are the signature traits of thoughtfully made Pinot, and its wonderful sense of depth earns it a place with the very best of the 2008 class.Connoisseurs' Guide to California Wine aging recommendation: Drinkable now.
