Joseph Phelps Cabernet Sauvignon Oakville 2005
The wine was aged in a combination of new French and American oak barrels (50%) and two-year-old oak (50%) from coopers Sylvain, Demptos, Nadalie, Canton, Taransaud, Vicard and World Cooperage. The fruit is from estate-owned vineyards (75%) and independent growers (25%). 2005 Vintage Notes: The 2005 vintage was unusually late due to mild temperatures that averaged between 70-80°. From August 1 to October 31, only 15 days exceeded 90°, and even then it never got hotter than 98°. Despite this, color and flavors developed early on, with good sugars, though acids took longer to develop in the ripening fruit. The first grapes (Sauvignon Blanc) came in September 11th, exactly one month later than the previous year. Fermenting juice showed great color, balance and flavor, similar to the cool growing seasons of '91, '94, '95, and '99. The vintage was also characterized by high yields. A wet spring increased tonnage by an average of 30% over expectations, and given that the 2004 vintage came in at 40-50% under projections, there was a 70% swing between the two years, making 2005 yields seem even higher. Depending on vineyard and crop balance, there will be variability in fruit quality throughout the North Coast. However we were extremely fortunate that the weather stayed dry and mild as long as it did, allowing fruit to avoid dehydration from conditions that were too warm, and mildew from weather that was too wet. The dark ruby-colored 2005 Napa Valley Cabernet Sauvignon resembles a classic Bordeaux both in aromatics and flavor. A rich bouquet of cinnamon, spice, licorice, graphite and caramel are followed by integrated layers of cherry, currant, fresh cream and balanced, sweet tannin, all of which contribute to a youthful, bright, multi-layered wine. Grapes were harvested at an average 24.7º Brix Months in barrel: French and American
his wine was rich and inviting on the nose hinting at dark fruits and forest floor. Showed a glimmer of green pepper but in a subtle and attractive way. Full bodied with intense currant and sweet plum fruit. Great balance and a pleasure to drink. Ended with a medium finish reminiscent of the dark fruits with a bit of licorice.
90% Cabernet Sauvignon, 6% Merlot and 4% Petite Verdot Nose has elements of spice, caramel. Flavors indicate a lot of oak. Long finish, great balance, strong tannins. I feel like it needs a year or two to really show.
Lovely scents of butter, oak, spice, and berries. Dry with a bit of cedar. Spice finish.
Deep, dark ruby red color. Nose is moody and dark with blue fruit, vanilla barrel, forest funk and dusty mocha... yum. On the palate, black current, raisin, licorice and with a rich, sweet mid-palate. Cherry liquor on the long finish. A really great wine that always pleases.
Just a great consistent wine. Deep dark purple with wonderfully balanced dark fruit and hints of vanilla and mocha. Let it breathe for at least 1 to 2 hours. Phelps does it right all of the time. Enjoy! Cheers!
Nose comes off a bit creamy and luscious before balancing the green line. Very front of the palate wine and big tannins which makes the mid-palate feel a bit short. Enjoyed the tannins and sweet finish.
Very nice smooth cab with full mouth-feel and lots of cassis, cherry and chocolate. Lush and velvety. Great nose, great finish.

The restrained, European-styled 2005 Cabernet Sauvignon exhibits classic notes of cedar, black currants, menthol, and spice as well as excellent fruit, sweet tannin, delineation, and vibrant acidity. It should drink well for a decade.
Good full ruby. Very primary aromas of blackberry, cassis and bitter chocolate. Broad and suave; not as sweet as the 2004 but there's no shortage of size here. Boasts lovely vibrancy and finishes with sweet tannins and excellent length. Stephen Tanzer's IWC. A Cabernet Sauvignon wine from California in USA. 2005 Joseph Phelps Cabernet Sauvignon 1500ml
