Hermann J. Wiemer Cabernet Franc Seneca Lake 2010

External Review:

Delicious. Beautiful color in the glass; this wine sings of black cherries and strawberries (tastes like mid-June to me). Firm tannins give this wine a smooth finish.

Riesling-obsessed connoisseurs know how important Hermann J. Wiemer Vineyard's pioneering work is to wine. Hermann, born in Germany with an extensive wine family background, discovered the Finger Lakes in the 1960's, and its cool climate and gravelly soil reminded him of the Mosel Valley. Realizing the untapped potential of the Finger Lakes region, he started to grow classic European vines along selected sites on one of the most prominent properties in the Finger Lakes. Hermann J. Wiemer Vineyard estate grown wines are established from traditions of excellence and have a reputation for being exceptionally lush, crisp and well balanced. Hermann J. Wiemer Vineyard is founded on the philosophy of quality and hand crafted wines. Located on the shores of Seneca Lake, the well drained sloping shalestone bedrock and Honeoye silt loam soil lend itself to the production of what critics consider to be some of the best grown Rieslings in America. I a big fan of Cab Franc because of the green pepper undertones that many of them have. But I am an even bigger fan of this one. It did not have that peppery bit going on but instead tasted like a well blended Bordeaux. Very delightful.
