Heitz Cellar Cabernet Sauvignon Martha's Vineyards Napa 2013

Member Review by Mr Dolce:

Rich, Hearty lush mouthfeel. Due to the 11 years of age the wine had a chewy texture.

Heitz Wine Cellars inhabits a pristine valley in the eastern hills of St. Helena known to the locals as Spring Valley. In 1964, Joe and Alice Heitz acquired this 160-acre ranch and winery to accommodate their burgeoning family business. The gray stone cellar, constructed of hand-chiseled perlite in 1898, safeguards Heitz' collection of French oak barrels which are filled with aging wine. The rich patina of its weathered walls is in perfect harmony with the high-tech equipment dotting the landscape of the winery's grounds in the 21st century. Second generation Kathleen Heitz Myers and David Heitz are now at the helm as president and winemaker. They have each been integral to the success of the family business since the 1970s, helping to build the worldwide reputation for Heitz Cellars --- a name that has become synonymous with luxury in the world of winemaking. Heitz Wine Cellars has earned countless accolades for its dazzling wines every year since 1961. Their three renowned vineyard-designated wines --- Martha's Vineyard Cabernet Sauvignon, Trailside Vineyard Cabernet Sauvignon and Bella Oaks Vineyard Cabernet Sauvignon --- are the highlight of the winery's distinguished resumé. Heitz' remarkable Martha's Vineyard Cabernet Sauvignon has been a collector's favorite for over 40 years. Wine Spectator underscored this wine's legendary status by selecting Martha's Vineyard Cabernet as one of the Top 12 wines of the 20th Century. Heitz Wine Cellars' Chardonnay, Grignolino, Zinfandel and Port have also earned their share of ardent fans over the years. To many admirers, the Heitz label is the premiere symbol of fine wine and graceful hospitality. "We handcraft our wines with the utmost respect for the incomparable vineyards of the Napa Valley. It's a real pleasure to share a bit of their magical bounty in every bottle of wine we make." - Kathleen Heitz Myers, President Since the winery ranch also includes the Heitz' family home, we direct visitors to our original site on St. Helena Highway where we have welcomed wine lovers for almost half a century. The 1966 vintage of Heitz Cellar Martha’s Vineyard Cabernet Sauvignon was introduced as the first wine in California with a vineyard designation on its label. Now in its 47th vintage since that historic Napa Valley benchmark, our famed Cabernet Sauvignon from Oakville continues to charm and impress wine lovers around the world. “The 2013 Martha’s Vineyard Cabernet Sauvignon is expressive of all the characteristics that make Martha’s Vineyard so recognizable. Notes of mint, bay leaf, cocoa powder, sweet blackberries, ripe raspberries and black cherry are complemented by the signature kiss of Limousin oak. The signature of the 2013 is its concentration of flavor from a near perfect growing season, and a bold structure that guarantees a long life of cellar aging.” - Brittany Sherwood, Winemaker

With all the grace and power of a dancer, the 2010 Martha’s Vineyard Cabernet is something to behold. This wine is so inviting with rich aromas of boysenberry, cassis and that classic Martha’s mint, all tightly woven around a sweet core. On the palate rich, savory notes of French oak and hints of cigar box mingle with well-integrated tannins, culminating in a silky finish. Focused and precise, this is a classically proportioned Cabernet Sauvignon. This is a wine so impressively structured that a great deal of its appeal lies in anticipating its potential. This is one Cabernet you’ll want to check in on for years to come.

Theres much to admire in this young Marthas, though it lacks the accessibility of the 2005. The core mint-chocolate-covered cherry and berry flavors are tight and structured, true to the vintage, so its best to cellar this one and see what happens. The wait is usually worth it. Best from 2013 through 2021. 2,708 cases made. -JL Pure and concentrated, our Marthas Vineyard Cabernet Sauvignon shares the unique beauty of its Napa Valley terroir with its lush varietal aroma. This is a well-integrated wine with a generous core of dark, rich fruit lightly embraced with mint. Layers of black cherry flavor unfold gracefully across the palate, building to a long, lovely finish. The incomparable Marthas Vineyard Cabernet is internationally acclaimed for its distinctive flavor and quality. Whether you choose to drink it today or cellar it for years to come, this is an unforgettable wine from a fabulous vintage! - Winery
