A warm welcome to Glen Carlou, situated in the heart of South Africa’s scenic Paarl Valley. The warm, dry summers and cold, wet winters of this area combine with an exciting variety of slopes and the riches of our soils to create unique winegrowing conditions. Glen Carlou was established in 1985 and since 2003 has been successfully owned and run by Hess Family Estates. To harness our farm’s vast winegrowing potential, our vines are meticulously selected in terms of rootstock and clone, while every variety is carefully chosen for its compatibility to the terroir. Yields are kept rigorously low, ensuring that nature’s gifts are distilled in the flavourful grapes that we harvest. And in the cellar our winemaker Arco Laarman and his team join forces with nature to create three distinctive wine ranges. Read less

The wine is a lovely deep, inky purple color in the glass and the nose provides a combination of leather, blackberry, tart cherry, toasted oak and just a hint of baking spice. The taste is quite nice, with some tart cherry and plum up front that transitions to some lovely notes of tobacco and dark chocolate midpalate. The tannins are somewhat young, but they are nicely structured, leading to a long, supple finish that's really very pleasant. Had this as part of a wine flight at a restaurant last night, and this was the standout of the three wines I tasted. It is a Bordeaux style wine, with Cabernet the dominant varietal. Cassis and dark fruit with some smokey aromas. Complex and balanced, with a nice long finish.

The Glen Carlou Grand Classique has a deep, intense color that does not show the wine’s age. The aromas are quite prominent and filled with black currant, leather, cocoa, and herbs. I find it to have a bit of an unusual, but very likeable, nose. The black currant and cocoa are the centerpiece of the flavor, aided by mint and licorice. It’s spicy and moderately hot. The wine has medium body and acidity and tannins that probably have mellowed a bit since it was bottled. The finish lingers with vanilla and cocoa. My only criticism is that the mid-palate is a bit lost and empty. Otherwise, this is a very enjoyable Bordeaux blend. See more wine reviews at: www.winedinewith.us

in a way, this kind of wine is the Holy Grail... A medium bodied bordeaux blend that you can drink without serious food, or at least, without a bloody great piece of meat. It has the nose of a left bank second wine - black cherries, whiff of cedar - gives you that Bordeaux hit, but the tannins don't come down like the Germans taking back Alsace in 1940. Which is a good thing. A fine effort, especially for the e12.99 I found it for. They say South Africa is all about the whites, but with a few more of these, they could nick a chunk of the market before the apathetic Bordelaise know what's what.

A big Bordeaux-style blend from S. Africa ready to drink now (one bottle was over-aged, other was fine, both cellared the same). Wine seems dominated by smoky raisins and sour plum-cherry with strong mineral (likely, iron) and spicebox notes and a bit of wood. Attacks with firm acidity. Thick plum-cherry and blackberry fruit with mineral (iron) and spice in the mouth and on the nose. Strong finish of sour fruit and the other elements. In my opinion this interesting wine is a good representation of a well-crafted S. African meritage, something distinct from a bordeaux (or anything else for that matter). Have a wine-loving friend who was just a-gog over this wine in late 2008.

It has a lifted bouquet of raspberry and dark plum aromas that needs to develop more complexity. The palate is medium-bodied with a sweet, kirsch-tinged entry. The acidity is very well entwined with the bright redcurrant and strawberry fruit that leads to a bright, vibrant finish.

Tiefes Purpurrot. Reichhaltiges und vielschich-tiges Bouquet nach schwarzen Beeren, Kompott, Kakao und Zedernholz, mit einer dezenten Eichenholz-/Vanillenote. Kraftvoll.
