Geyser Peak Cabernet Sauvignon 2017

Editorial Review by Snooth Editorial:

Dark black fruit aromas of black currant, blackberry, and cinnamon with some wooded aromas of cedar and forest floor. A strong blend of Cabernet and Petit Verdot, this wine has a fair bit of structure and good fruit flavors, with some savory notes of teriyaki and black olive, clove, cinnamon, black currant and a long finish with chocolate coffee beans and gripping tannins.

Founded in 1880, Geyser Peak Winery is one of California’s oldest and most award-winning wineries. Founded by Augustus Quitzow, the winery was built in 1882 in Geyserville, making it one of the pioneering California wineries of the time. Geyser Peak Winery consists of 5 vineyards, one of which is located in the Russian River Valley AVA, while the others are in Alexander Valley. Since most of the grapes come from Alexander Valley, the growing regions have long ripening seasons. Alexander Valley is a great region for growing Cabernet Sauvignon vines, but Chardonnay, Zinfandel, Merlot, and Sauvignon Blanc are also successfully grown. Ondine Chattan and Jaeson Mackura, winemakers for Geyser Peak Winery, are also behind the screw cap movement that is very controversial among wineries and consumers alike. All of their white wines are bottled using screw caps, or “Stelvin closures” as they are often called (Stelvin is actually a brand of screw caps, like Ziplock is a brand synonymous with zip bags and Xerox is a brand synonymous with photocopy machines). Check the label carefully. The 2013 that I bought says "California" not "Alexander Valley" and it shows. Not at all what I expect from Geyser Peak Cab. Tastes like an $8 mass produced wine. The wine store put it in the same place that the good stuff used to be in and I didn't look closely or I would have bought only one bottle to try first.

A nice Alexander Valley Cabernet. The tannins are there but balanced. there is some backbone and structure to this wine....along with a very beautiful color of deep crimson. This is a very good value for what you actually pay. The 2009 was held back an additional year in bottle storage before it was released. Nice value!

Excellent pairing with our meals of pork and steak. Nice bouquet and slight buttery flavor.

The wine is a deep, inky purple at the center, with bright ruby along the edges. The nose presents aromas of blackberry, plum and cassis overlaid with some earthy notes of leather and tar. The taste is packed with jammy fruit up front, with blueberry, plum and blackberry, that transition nicely to some notes of black pepper and spice along with some earthy notes of limestone midpalate. The finish is just lovely, with still well structured tannins providing the foundation for a long, smooth and exceptionally dry finish. Geyser Peak winery has a long history and their winemaking philosophy is the same today as it was more than a century ago. They create top quality wines combining traditional Old World practices with modern techniques and offer value. This Cab from the outstanding 2012 vintage is sourced from top vineyards in the Alexander Valley and beyond. A blend of 85% Cabernet Sauvignon with Petit Verdot, Malbec, Cab Franc and Syrah aged 12 months in 80% American and 20% French oak barrels. Stylish and smooth, loaded with black cherry, blackberry, currants, anise, dark chocolate flavors. Don't miss this super value Cab!

This wine is a classic example of Geyser Peak’s intense, lively style of Cabernet Sauvignon. Uplifted fruit flavors of red and black cherry predominate in the aroma, but the underlying complexity hint

Deep red with purple accents. On the nose: currant, black plum, blueberry, nutty oak. The palate expresses layers of currant, black cherry and toasty oak filing out on the palate with a generous wave of wild berry and briar fruit. Black tea, a hint of soy and sleek tannins bring weight and length to the dominant fruit and a shade of well-proportioned oak contributes sweetness to the finish. - Winery

The Alexander Valley offers an array of soils, exposures, and elevations in which to grow Cabernet Sauvignon. Blending components from the valley floor, benchlands, and hillsides allows us to produce a wine with great dimension from a single appellation. Our estate vineyards that surround the winery have become an important component of this wine and we work to optimize each vineyard block to produce fruit of great distinction and character. - WineryAPPELLATION: ALEXANDER VALLEYGRAPE VARIETY: CABERNET SAUVIGNON WITH SHIRAZ, PETIT VERDOT AND TANNATSTORAGE/TYPE: 100% AMERICAN OAK 20% NEW OAK, 80% A BALANCED MIXTURE OF ONE-, TWO- & THREE, YEAR OLD OAKMATURATION TIME: 15 MONTHSALCOHOL - 13.5%pH - 3.61T.A - 6.2 g/LR.S. - DRY

I was impressed by the quality of this Alexander Valley Cabernet Sauvignon. It starts off with aromas of ripe blackberries and peppery spice. The flavors of black cherries and expresso are bright and fresh, with soft tannins. Serve with meat loaf and sauteacute;ed mushrooms.
