Situated on the slopes overlooking one of the deepest parts of Seneca Lake is Fox Run -- a winery with fifty acres of vineyards producing a remarkable range of fine wines. Under the dynamic, forward-looking leadership of Scott Osborn, Fox Run has become one of the truly great producers in the Finger Lakes region just south of Rochester, New York. Native grape varieties put the Finger Lakes on the map a century and half ago, and French-American hybrids, bred for cold resistance, still have an important niche in the region. But Osborn was convinced that non-hybrid European Vinifera grapes could yield wine excellent enough to put the Finger Lakes in the ranks of the world’s top fine wine producers. For more than a century Fox Run was a dairy farm. The first grapes were not planted until 1985, and the barn, erected shortly after the Civil War, was restored and converted to a winery and tasting room with a spectacular view of the lake in 1989. Elegant black cherry and currant fruit, with a firm cedar edge and herbal hint on the finish. A solid Cabernet in the Old World camp. Drink now through 2004.

Good ripeness here, with black cherry fruit, and a tobacco note on the smoky finish.

Fox Run Vineyards is located on the western banks of Seneca Lake and in 2008 was the first New York State winery ever, to be named in Wine & Spirits Magazine's Top 100 Wineries in the World. Seneca boasts a large number of the region’s wineries because of its large size (40 miles long) and depth (over 400 feet). And this massive body of water provides a unique tempering effect to the vineyards along its banks. This 2007 Cabernet Franc comes from estate vineyards averaging 14 years of age which may account for the complexity of this easy drinking red. It shows bright berry fruit and savory herb and spice notes with a refreshing acid balance that makes it perfect as an aperitif or matched with your favorite everyday foods.
