Fonseca Ruby NV

Winemaker's Notes:

Ruby port is the traditional style of port and Fonseca have been shipping Ruby since the company was founded over 150 years ago. Fonseca take great pride in their Ruby which has remained consistent in quality for over a century and a half. The wine is aged for three years in large wooden vats where they soften and develop without losing their fresh, intense fruity character and their deep ruby colour.

Ruby Port (or late bottle vintage at similar price to the $18 I paid) is generally light, lively, bright, and dare I say happy. This wine is musty and dark (and I don't mean color but just overall feel of it). It's not bad at all. My personal prefernce for everyday port is generally for something more like Graham's Six Grapes or a LBV, but this is definitely a change of pace. But I probably won't buy again.

Not bad. Very full bodied, sweet raisin, plum and blackcurrant before a sharp alcolholic dried fruit, fig and currant kick. Not the best Port I've ever had but still a good one all the same.

I didn't mind drinking this, but it wasn't particularly rewarding. Taste did not live up to the delicious raisin and red fruit aroma. Didn't taste bad; just wasn't very complex.

Nice basic ruby port. Easy to drink.

Started out good, but it faded pretty quickly.

My favorite cheap ruby port. Always great after dinner. Especially on a cold night!

This stuff is great and in many cases nearly as good as a vintage bottle. When dining out, I will usually go for a glass of Bin 27 or LBV over a vintage port unless I am sure the bar just opened a bottle from a good vintage or has a good wine preservation system because the complex notes present in an expensive vintage port fade quickly.

One of the big brands in Reserve Ports, Bin 27 is long and well established. So it’s good to report that it is great wine, with sweetness and balancing acidity and fruit. Soft and juicy it is ready to drink, but there are structure and flavors of dried raisins to give it some aging potential.

A great value in a “vintage character” ruby port, Bin 27 was first released commercially by Fonseca in 1972. It’s lush and smooth with flavors of cherries and currants. It’s best served at room temperature with dessert, on its own, or with a fine cigar.

Has a deep perfume of plums, berries and cedar, with spirity notes. the similar flavors are sweet, round, concentrated, balanced and lush — delicious.

Members of the Port trade are always looking for a simple tawny or ruby to drink after a good bottle of vintage Port. They need look no further than Fonseca’s Bin 27. It’s always opulent and delicious… with loads of sweet fruit flavors and a hint of cedar on the finish. The Bin 27 is treated and lightly filtered so there’s no sediment left in the bottle, but I’ve seen older bottles that throw a deposit and improve with bottle age.

Blended from reserve wines selected for their intense fruit character and depth of color, Fonseca Bin No. 27 is perfectly structured. Its rich, full body and luscious blackcurrant and cherry flavors, also evident in the nose, carry into an intense, lingering finish.
