The best vineyards have historically played a large role in the Spanish wine world: see, for instance, the centuries-old valuation of the top Jerez pagos. But, starting in the mid-19th century, the development of Spain's wines took a different tack when the so-called bodegas industriales appeared on the scene: big négociant-type firms with very large productions of name-brand wines made with grapes –often, bought-in– from different places. In 2000, a group of small producers of single-estate wines from Old and New Castile got together to defend the personality which defines the wines from the best growths and to promote this culture of individuality which was being reborn in Spain. They founded Grandes Pagos de Castilla (Great Growths of Castile). This not-for-profit association became Grandes Pagos de España in 2003, reponding to the requests of many colleagues in other parts of the country who wished to make the single-growth concept better known and to seek excellence through the direct relationship between wine and its place of origin. This 2008 vintage bottling is a blend of 76% Syrah, 13% Monastrell and 11% Bobal, bottled unfiltered after 11 months in French oak. The world's top critics praise this wine in unison: Steve Tanzer 92, Wine Spectator 90. We agree that Finca Sandoval is without a doubt a wine gem!Finca Sandoval is dense ruby-purple in color showing intense aromas of cherry, blackberry, cassis, licorice, mocha and spice. Bold on the palate with full body and velvety tannins, the wine offers flavors of dark berries, chocolate, meat, minerals and toasted oak. Beautifully balanced to enjoy now and over the next 8-10 years. The finish is long and full, with chewy tannins. Bottled unfiltered.Enjoy Finca Sandoval with roast leg of lamb, venison, paella and aged cheeses.
