Filippo Sobrero Barolo 1979

Editorial Review by Gregory Dal Piaz:

Deep and dark on the nose with an initial blast of cheesiness that clears up to reveal subtle tones of roast chestnut, white pepper, nut brittle, and hot slate. In the mouth this is very matte and smooth at first but air gives this a round, polished feel that offers a core of medicinal cherry fruit with a bit of menthol and bay leaf leading to the finish. This shows it's best on the finish with it's inner mouth perfume of cigarbox and crystalized fruit tones. Lacks some intensity but a fine, complete wine. 90pts

Very evolved nose with a funghi, canned snails, dried shitake tone at first then more mossy, and old woodsy with spicy fruit tones that grow and a fine cigar wrapper tobacco background note. The tannins are resolved and the wine is silky with bright acid supporting sour cherry fruit. The alcohol is high but the fruit supports it. Great length on the finish with a river stone mineral final that adds complexity the the lingering notes of red plum. This gained weight in the mouth gaining a fine round ripeness and picked up a green coffee bean top note. As good as could be expected, maybe better! 93pts
