Felsina Vin Santo Chianti Classico 2010

Editorial Review by Gregory Dal Piaz:

This opens with a huge bay leaf and vanilla bubblegum tone, the oak here is still obvious with very little fruit in evidence though there are nice tones of earth, tobacco, and prosciutto fat adding some complexity. The texture is creamy and velvetty with lowish acidity and finely polished tannins. The core or bitter black cherry fruit remains with and edge of leather and bitter almond adding some complexity. The texture here is absolutely fascinating though the oaken flavors that accompany the creaminess are a bit much. The softest, oakiest Fontalloro. 87pts

Fèlsina. A name reaching back to Etruscan times. A feeling that infuses the air, in harmony with the quality of the light, with the earth’s scent and the fragrance of the breezes, with the march of the seasons and night time silences. Before the eye that ranges unencumbered in all directions, a metaphysical landscape takes shape. A wondrous unfolding of hills, none blocking its neighbour, all offering spacious spectra of colour, yellow to indigo, in luminous waves rolling to a horizon majestically profiled with an ancient volcano, Monte Amiata, beloved of the Etruscans, that enigmatic race that first offered the vine and the olive to the early civilization of the Italic peninsula. This en-lightened land lived an extraordinary moment in Italy’s history, witnessing, if only for a few moments, the dream come true of an ideal city: Siena. Siena of the 13th and 14th centuries, where nature and art crowned the creative genius of those dwelling in such favoured spaces. Read less
Suggested Recipe Pairing presented by
Layered Rice Pudding

RiceSelect's fragrant Jasmati® is blended with eggs, milk and fall's favorite spices, cinnamon and nutmeg, to create a delicious rice pudding, which is layered on top of fluffy cream cheese and abuttery pecan crust. Pairs well with a bold, tawny port with flavors of dried fruits, nuts, and spices.

Effusive aromas of vanilla, toffee, coffee crema soar from the glass with deep tones of dried apricot, smoky caramel and butterscotch and a lurking edge of bitter orange peel flambe. In the mouth this retains impressive power yet has fine balance with a thick yet neither cloying or overly sweet character that has lovely depth to it's slightly bitter burnt sugar note and extremely long finish of honey dipped apricot kernels, dried peach and amaretto crunch. Really drinking well and so much better than a bottle 4 years ago. Absolutely delicious 94pts

I think I love Vin Santo, the biggest reason is the number one thing, the few I’ve had really remind me of my Grandfather’s pipe smoke. Amazing what childhood memories do to you. The nose on this was candy sweet with layers of spices and wood. Fruitcake and maple syrup. Then you sip it and the sweetness is nowhere near as prevalent as you’d expect. Instead you taste caramel, peach, clove and cinnamon spice. All carried by a lush full-bodied frame that manages to melt away to a refreshing and clean finish. You could spend the whole night just smelling this glass.

Golden yellow, with coppery highlights. Peach, apricot, pineapple and tropical fruit aromas.Consistency on the palate, softness and elegance nicely structured by the oak barrels.Wine with great balance, favorable acidity and a well-harmonized residual sugar. Long in the mouth.

Leuchtende Bernsteinfarbe.
