Domaine Grand Veneur France Rhone Cotes du Rhone Reserve Viognier 2009

Winemaker's Notes:

The colour is purple-tinged garnet. The aromatic range of the nose goes from fresh berries (wild raspberry, blackcurrant, blackberry) to spices. The palate is big and full-flavoured, with silky-smooth tannins and aromas of the fruit already mentioned. The finish introduces touches of liquorice and pepper.

In 1320, Pope Jean XXII had the first vines planted in CHATEAUNEUF DU PAPE. But only in 1360 did the vine acquire a certain importance, first with the white wine drunk by Innocent VI, then with red wine; but these products remained little known. Only from the 18th century onward, did the vine occupy the territory and papal wine begin to be famous. In the Jaume family, the generations have perpetuated the profession of winegrower since Mathieu JAUME decided, in 1826, to grow vines in CHATEAUNEUF DU PAPE. The successions were assumed by Marius, Fernand and Roger. In 1979, Alain and Odile JAUME carried on the family tradition with the creation of the GRAND VENEUR WINERY. At the beginning, the vineyard extended over 22 acres. Over time, the vineyard grew to today's figure of nearly 135 acres spread in the CHÂTEAUNEUF DU PAPE, LIRAC, CÔTES DU RHÔNE VILLAGES "Les Champauvins", and CÔTES DU RHÔNE areas. In 2003, a new estate of 35 acres was acquired: the "CLOS DE SIXTE" Appellation d'Origine Contrôlée LIRAC. This appellation located 10 kilometres from Châteauneuf du Pape, is one of the thirteen Crus of the Rhône Valley. Over the years, the family has grown, too. Today, Sébastien and Christophe are gradually taking charge of the management of the estate. Sharing the family know-how, they have to put to maximum advantage their knowledge in wine-growing and wine-tasting. Read less

This crisp, juicy wine from Alain Jaume and his sons Cristophe and Sebastian, made from 75% Grenache, 15% Syrah and 5% Cinsaut, has ruby red color, flavors of dark, sweet cherry and cinnamon and a long finish. Enjoy this richly, delicious wine with chili or grilled hamburgers.

The 2009 Cotes du Rhone Reserve (an identical blend) is soft, ripe, peppery, fruity, opaque ruby in color, with a more narrow palate. While excellent, this racy, reasonably priced wine has to take a backseat to the brilliant 2010.

Produced from 70% Grenache and 30% Syrah, Mourvedre, and Cinsault, the elegant 2003 Cotes du Rhone exhibits a gorgeous perfume of berry fruit, melted licorice, and pepper followed by a medium to full-bodied, tasty red with enough acidity to provide definition. Drink it over the next 2-4 years.

The 2009 Cotes du Rhone Reserve (70% Grenache, 20% Syrah, and 10% Cinsault) exhibits a leafy/garrigue/Provencal character intermixed with raspberry and black cherry fruit. The sweetness of the tannins, plump, medium-bodied style, and touch of pepper result in a classic Candocirc;tes du Rhandocirc;ne to drink over the next several years.

The plots of the Domaine Grand Veneur are located on slopes where the vines are 90 years old, which guarantees the constant quality of their wines. They are masters at producing fine Rhône wines, with finesse and the tradition of winemaking handed down through generations. This wine starts off with a deep purple color, and has sensuous floral and spice aromas. The depth continues with ripe dark fruit flavors accompanied by cinnamon and clove spices. Enjoy this wine with barbecue-glazed meatloaf and roasted new potatoes with rosemary and garlic.

A perennial value, the 2004 Reserve Côtes du Rhône has a crisp nose of black cherries that leads to velvety cherry and black raspberry fruit flavors. It finishes long with spicy fruit and minerals.
