Domaine de la Janasse Châteauneuf-du-Pape Cuvée Chaupin 2010

Winemaker's Notes:

95 points Rhone Report: Showing brilliantly from tank last year, and not disappointing from bottle this year, the 2010 Domaine de la Janasse Châteauneuf-du-Pape is a stunning bottle of wine! A blend of 80% Grenache and equal parts Syrah and Mourvedre, its opaque purple color is followed by knockout aromas of blackberry liqueur, flower oil, liquid mineral, licorice, and graphite. Not losing a beat on the palate either, with a full-bodied, structured, and edgy feel, as well as brilliant purity of fruit, this serious, age-worthy effort needs a handful of years in the cellar, and has 15-20 years or more of total longevity. While the chase will be on for the Cuvée Chaupin and Vieilles Vignes bottlings, do not overlook this wine! (Sep 2012)

Aimé SABON comes back from his military duty in 1967 and takes over his father's vineyards (who was bringing his grapes into cooperative cave) and father-in-law's vineyards (who was selling the wine). He builds his cave in 1973 and thus creates the domain of La Janasse, from the name of family camp located in Courthezon. His ambition will be to enlarge the domain by acquiring new vineyards of different varieties, going from 15 ha to 55 ha nowadays. In 1991, after a BTA in winemaking and oenology at Beaune and a BTS in marketing at Macon, Christophe joins his father who leaves him the responsability of the cave. He will create the different vintages and develop the marketing of the domain. Isabelle, the sister of Christophe and also oenologist, joins the team in 2001. Nowadays, all SABON family members work together on the domain : * Aimé SABON : vineyards * Hélène SABON : accountancy - administrative * Isabelle SABON : marketing - vinification * Christophe SABON : vineyards - vinification - marketing Read less

The nose was plush with ripe blackberry fruits, violet candies, herbs and sweet spices. On the palate, it was velvety with intense concentration, yet balanced with acidity that kept it fresh and juicy. Sweet blackberry, cola and violets from the bouquet filled the senses. The finish was remarkably long with lasting dark fruits that seemed to change from ripe to tart as they melted from the palate

Another killer effort from Sabon, and one of my favorites of the entire portfolio is the 2010 Cotes du Rhone Les Garrigues. This wine is 100% percent Grenache from old vines aged in foudre and comes from just across the appellation border of Chateaun... Robert Parkers Wine Advocate. Tasted out of foudre, the 2010 Domaine de la Janasse Côtes du Rhône, mostly Grenache but with small amounts of Syrah, Mourvèdre, Cinsault, and Carignan, shows a peppery, mineral, and dark fruited profile with beautiful purity, good concentration, and... A potential candidate for perfection is the 2010 Chateauneuf du Pape Chaupin, which may turn out to eclipse my favorite Chaupin to date, the 2007, and closely behind it, the 2009. Dense blackish/purple, with extraordinary intensity, precision and foc... Robert Parkers Wine Advocate.
