De Morgenzon Dmz Sauvignon Blanc 2012

Winemaker's Notes:

"(DMZ is De Morgenzon's value range; 5% of this wine was barrel-fermented): Pale straw. Pure, complex aromas of gooseberry, quinine, licorice, talc and fresh herbs. Intensely flavored and distinctly dry, with intense citrus fruit flavors complicated by saline minerality. Finishes serious and persistent, with lovely lingering perfume. In comparison to a classic New Zealand sauvignon blanc from Marlborough, this is a bit riper and less pungent but at least as concentrated and long on the aftertaste. A terrific value...90" IWC 6/13

All wine estates in the Western Cape are beautiful and all have unique terroir.    However, we believe that DeMorgenzon is the most extraordinary of them all. Our slopes rise from about 200m to nearly 400m above sea level and our vistas embrace Cape Town, Table Mountain, Cape Point, Cape Hangklip, the Hottentots Holland mountains, Helderberg and Simonsberg with the ocean as a backdrop. While we could call ourselves 'mountain vineyards' we prefer to be known as 'garden vineyards'. In Spring specially chosen wildflowers flourish between our vines. We have no doubt that a biodiverse and ecologically sensitive environment produces infinitely better grapes and the beauty of our gardens is captured in every bottle of our wine.    We pipe Baroque music through our vineyards 24x7 and believe that the power of music positively influences the ripening process.  At DeMorgenzon we are totally committed to excellence and focus on crafting wines which express our unique terroir and fruit within a classic structure - we believe that the finest South African wines combine New World-style fruit with Old World-style elegance. DeMorgenzon, 'the morning sun,' was so named because it is the first part of the Stellenboschkloof valley to see the sun because of its high altitude and aspects. We cover the top southern and eastern slopes of Ribbokkop, overlooking the pinnacle of Kanonkop from where a cannon was fired to alert the farms in the region that a ship had put into Table Bay. The first road from Cape Town to Stellenbosch ran through the Stellenbosch Kloof.  The first vines in the Stellenbosch Hills were planted during the early 1700's as the mild climate is ideally suited to the production of quality grapes.    In 2003 Wendy and Hylton Appelbaum bought DeMorgenzon. The estate has been transformed over the past few years.   Read less

Complex aromas of wildflowers, cut grass, tangerine, fig, white pepper and melon slowly and subtly fill the glass. A moderately large scaled wine, there’s a terrific vein of acidity driving this across the palate. the flavors show early flashes of fig and melon before they are joined by subtle herbal element and a nice base of tangerine/tangelo tinged citrus notes. A nice mineral edge and fine green herbal notes emerge on the backend and lead to to a long, vibrant green fruited, chalky, and subtly herbal finish that shows both energy and power. Bing, bing, bing. I’m all over this. 91pts
