Dashe Todd Brothers Ranch Old Vines Alexander Valley Zinfandel 2008
As is our tradition, we harvested the Todd Brothers Ranch grapes before any of our other grapes, in early September. The grapes were trucked to the winery in ½ ton picking bins, and then hand sorted—to remove any materials other than grapes or less than perfect grapes—on a conveyor belt on their way to the crusher. We fermented the grapes using our traditional method of native yeast fermentation, using the yeasts on the surface of the grapes to ferment the grape must. This native yeast method maximizes flavor, color, and complexity from the grapes. At dryness, the wine was gently pressed in a membrane press and pumped to traditional 60-gallon French oak barrels.
Editorial Reviews for Dashe Todd Brothers Ranch Old Vines Alexander Valley Zinfandel
Tight on the nose and a little minty, with slow to open notes of bittersweet chocolate, toasty oak, blackberry fruit and some fennel. Pretty rich on entry and dense, though with very good balance that allows the slow to unwind core of black cherry and boysenberry fruit to drape itself across the palate. The tannins here are very polished, lending this a velvety yet dense feel. The back end turns quite chocolaty before the oak spice takes over on the moderately long and slightly black berried finish. This needs decanting or some time in the bottle. 88pts
A very pretty Zin. The dark fruits are balanced with floral aromas and deep tannins. The flavors swirl around in a flourish playing off each other nicely. I like the fresh mintiness that washes in and out to smooth out its concentrated fruitiness and bitter notes.
