Darcie Kent Vineyards Pinot Noir Rava Blackjack 2011

Editorial Review by Gregory Dal Piaz:

This is pungent and focused if a bit on the candied side of the aromatic spectrum, with sweet vanilla and creme caramel notes wrapped in spicy oak, candied cherry and wild blackberry fruit. Round and intense on entry, this delivers terrific blueberry fruit right up front with a nice base of spicy wood and tannins that remain mostly covered in the mouth. There's some strawberry vanilla ice cream notes on the back end that lead into a somewhat spicy finish, which shows a touch of heat. A pretty big wine that remains fairly fresh with intense flavors that are ultimately a bit simple. 88pts

Darcie and David were first attracted to this Merlot vineyard in 1995 while searching the western U.S. for the best growing conditions in which to nurture the grape that made Bordeaux's Pomerol region famous.By that time, Washington State was already establishing a reputation for its Merlot, grown on the windy, dry slopes that drain into the cool Columbia River valley. California however, had yet to develop a proven region where Merlot consistently achieved world-class status. For most Golden State vintners, Merlot was a classic blender for fine Cabernet Sauvignon or a softer, less tannic "fighting varietal". But in Crane Ridge's well-drained gravely soils, cool nights and persistent San Francisco Bay breezes, the Kents' saw the place where Merlot might realize its' quality potential in California. Great everyday wine. A nice light red for spring. Good with or without food. Nice chilled a little.
