Columbia Crest Grand Estate Cabernet Sauvignon 2008

Member Review by bn196:

Disappointing compared to the 2005 I had 3 years ago. Sweeter, less tannic, softer on the palate.

Spices, blackberries, and cassis are found in the nose of another extraordinary value, the 2002 Cabernet Sauvignon Grand Estates (97,000 cases). Medium-bodied and satin-textured, it offers impressive concentration and depth to its blackberry-dominated character. It should be consumed over the next 2-3 years.

With plenty of consumer-friendly vanilla/tobacco flavors, this value Cabernet also brings in dark fruits - blackberry and cassis. The tannins have been smoothed out a bit, though they still carry a little bit of stemmy edge. A good everyday choice for that burger.

The purple-colored 2008 Cabernet Sauvignon Grand Estates (225,000 cases) spent 16 months in 33% new oak. Cedar, tobacco, incense, violets, spice box, black currant, and blackberry aromas inform the nose of a layered, spicy, easy-to-understand Cabernet that is nicely balanced and moderately lengthy. It is a very good value that will provide enjoyment for another 4-5 years.

The 2007 Cabernet Sauvignon Grand Estates spent 16 months in 33% new oak, again a remarkable expense for a $11 wine. Medium purple-colored, it sports an inviting nose of spice box, violets, earth notes, cassis, and black currant. Forward on the palate with plenty of ripe fruit and succulent flavors, it will deliver pleasure over the next 6 years.

Bright and open-textured, with minty blackberry and currant flavors, shaded with hints of pepper and spice as the flavors echo gently on the refined finish. Drink now through 2005.

Bigger, chewier than the Two Vines, this shows more concentrated cassis and very firm tannins; there are some early hints of herb and olive. Overall there is simply power and punch.

Dark fruits and spices are found in the aromatic profile of the 2001 Cabernet Sauvignon Grand Estates (195,000 cases). A friendly, expansive wine, this 100% Cabernet Sauvignon is soft and supple in the attack, revealing ripe black fruits, before compressing in the finish, exhibiting firm tannin. Drink this fine value over the next 4 years.
