The 2006 Cabernet Sauvignon spent 16 months in 20% new oak, a remarkable expenditure for a 200,000 case production wine selling at its humble price. It is dark ruby-colored with a pleasant nose of cedar, spice box, and cassis. Smooth, ripe. and seamless on the palate, this balanced, easy-going effort will provide pleasure for another 3-4 years.
This wine has become something like Ol' Faithful to the American wine consumer. Affordable, quaffable, yet substantial and always interesting, Columbia Crest is a continual best buy. The 2000 shows the trademark blueberry and blackcurrant with a hint of anise and earth adding to its complexity. Structured and crisp, it tends to show best with some food to open up the rich primary fruit underlying its firm surface.
Smoky, slightly gamy aromas and flavors add interest to the basic black cherry and currant in this solid, beautifully proportioned Cabernet. A stylish red, nicely packed with flavor, and with no harsh edges. Drink now through 2005.
This follows along the same track as the 2003 - moderately ripe with lightly herbal fruit mixing plum, blueberry and cherry. The tannins have a rough edge and a rather sharp bite; this will smooth out if you decant it an hour or so.
This has really ripe blackberry and cherry flavors, soft tannins, a nice fat mouthfeel and hints of darker roasted stuff. Big, smooth and lush, it gathers power and finishes with a big swoop of meaty, fruity, fat flavor. Not heavy, but delicious and beautifully balanced.
Spices, blackberries, and cassis are found in the nose of another extraordinary value, the 2002 Cabernet Sauvignon Grand Estates (97,000 cases). Medium-bodied and satin-textured, it offers impressive concentration and depth to its blackberry-dominated character. It should be consumed over the next 2-3 years.
Firm and slightly chalky, this features light plum, blueberry and mocha components. There's a hint of soapiness, and some herbal roughness in the finish.
