Cogno Barolo 2001

External Review by Premier Wine & Spirits:

A wine with a rich and decadent fruit structure and a spice, meat and cedar undertone. Full-bodied velvety and long. It goes on and on. Best after 2008.

Incredible aromas of ultraripe plums that verge on prunes but turn to flowers and fresh fruit. Full-bodied, with sweet round tannins and a refined finish. A beauty. Best after 2008.

Interesting aromas of tar, roses and fruit. Full-bodied, with firm and mouthpuckering tannins. Needs time to soften. Better than the 1997. Best after 2005.

Husband and wife Valter Fissore and Nadia Cogno run this small estate perched above the prestigious Ravera cru in Novello. I found all the wines I tasted to be beautiful. They are made in an elegant and understated style that is very appealing. These are wines that will be at their best at the dinner table, and a fair amount of aeration is necessary to allow the complexity of the wines to come through. The 2001 Barolo Ravera, a lively dark ruby, presents a rich nose of toasted oak, vanilla and aromatic sices. Much more open than when last tasted, it offers expressive layers of ripe dark red fruit with outstanding length and plenty of supporting structure to drink well for at least another decade. It is aged one year in barriques followed by a second year in Slavonian oak casks of 25 and 40 hectoliters. Anticipated maturity: 2008andndash;2016.

Good deep red. Deeply pitched, smoky aromas of black cherry, mocha and spices. Big, rich, broad and sweet, with a lush middle palate already displaying plenty of chewy fruit. Sneaky acids and firm tannins give this generous wine plenty of grip. An excellent showing.

The 2005 Barolo Ravera is a big, concentrated wine that comes to life with a gorgeous display of dark fruit, flowers, minerals and menthol. This rich, sumptuous Barolo shows tons of energy and integrity with a long, finely tuned finish. The estate gave the Ravera 24 months in 25-30 hectoliter Slavonian oak barrels. Anticipated maturity: 2012-2022.
