Chateauneuf du Pape Cuvee da Capo Pegau Premier 2000

Winemaker's Notes:

"...a monument to old vine Grenache as well as traditionally made Chateauneuf du Pape...has virtually everything you could ever want in a profound Chateauneuf du Pape...The extraordinary nose reveals aromas of kirsch liqueur, new saddle leather, animal fur, Provencal herbs, spice box, licorice, and a salty sea breeze character. On the palate, the wine is enormous, with an unctuosity, thickness, and purity that must be tasted to be believed...100." WA 2/04. "Wine simply doesn‟t get any better than the 2000 Domaine du Pégaü Châteauneuf-du-Pape Cuvée da Capo and it is a profound, absolutely stunning bottle of wine. A blend of 95% old vine Grenache and the rest a mix of allowed varieties, it possesses jaw-dropping, massively complex aromas of garrigue, mature dark fruits, cigar, spice box, and roasted meats on the nose. While the nose is mature, the palate is still youthful and fresh, showing a full-bodied, powerful texture, loads of concentration through the mid-palate, and ripe, sweet tannin on the blockbuster finish. While this should continue to shine for another decade (or more), I would not hesitate to start cracking bottles as this is in a great spot. Simply an awesome wine that I wish every Châteauneuf-du-Pape fan could taste...100" RR 9/11

The story behind the Domaine de Pegau begins in the late 17th century with our ancestors farming a few small fields of vines bordered with olive and cherry trees. The revenue from the cherries sold in the local provençal markets covered the costs of working the vineyards. The olives and their golden oil were for family consumption, whilst the grapes went into producing the already famous red wine of Chateauneuf-du-Pape. The grape picking was family work which took place in an ambience of light-heartedness and fun but with a respect for quality and even then a vigerous selection of the best grapes. At the end of the row the horse waited patiently for the moment when he felt the wooden paniers gorged with grapes weighing down his cart. Once at the winery the grapes were liahtlv Dressed to break the skins - foulé, (the word means literally press by stepping on), the whole bunches were put in trie vats and then the wine-making took place over a period of 15 days. Times have changed, but this traditional style of wine-making is continued today at the Domaine de Pegau. Read less
