Chateau Montelena Zinfandel Calistoga Estate 2006
Wine Advocate Review Rated 87 From estate vineyards, Montelena fashions an old style, classic California Zinfandel. The 2006 Zinfandel Estate is a sexy effort with crisp acidity, fresh berry fruit, plenty of pepper and spice, and no hard edges. It should be drunk over the next 2-3 years.
Tasted at the winery 9/20/09
Pours a slightly dark violet color with lighter red hues around the edges. Aromas of dark berries, black pepper, tobacco and leather. Starts off with nice amounts of dark berries and black pepper. In the middle, there is more undertones of spices and some leather. Finishes with more berries, black pepper spice and a hint of tobacco. A nice medium to full bodied Zin. The tannins are subsiding some. This is a nice compliment to any grilled meal.
Three and a half glasses
Perhaps our bottle (purchased that day at a discount wine shop) had not been stored properly. The wine had aged: tawney in color, little fruit. One strong note on the nose and palate: pepper, black pepper. The alcohol level (14.8?) overpowered the wine. Altogether an unbalanced and disappointing wine $29 wine, expecially considering that we planned a meal around it. I've had wonderful wines in decades past from Montelena. I'll write this one off to being stored in too hot a setting...
Well balanced and fruit driven. Rich body, really velvety, silky. Alcohol integrates really well...not too over the top.
