Château Lafite Rothschild Red Bordeaux Blend Pauillac 2005
The immense class is clear to see. The silky, incredibly concentrated and
elegant brambly fruit is wonderfully fragrant with lovely minerality and hints
of cedar. The super-ripe tannins are accompanied by layers and layers of fruit
alongside a freshness and firm acidity. This is like a sleeping giant with many
of its glorious elements hiding from view, like hidden treasure. Even so it is
utterly compelling, with each taste a PhD of Claret. Drink 2020-2050. BBR
Score: 20/20. Wine Spectator: 95-100/100.

The 1990 appears to be a synthesis in style of the backward, tannic 1988 and more forward, softer 1989. The nose is not yet as seductive as the 1989's, but the wine exhibits a deeper, thicker, ruby/purple color, and cuts a fuller, more complete profile on the palate. It not only rivals the seductiveness of the 1989, but it is also a far richer and more tannic wine. Although it needs at least a decade of cellaring, it should last for 30 or more years. An impressive wine, the 1990 Lafite is this estate's finest wine since the 1982 and 1986. Anticipated maturity: 2000-2025. Last tasted, 6/93.
The 1995 Lafite-Rothschild (only one-third of the harvest made it into the final blend) is a blend of 75% Cabernet Sauvignon, 17% Merlot, and 8% Cabernet Franc. The wine was showing spectacularly well when I tasted it in November, 1997. It exhibits a dark ruby purple color, and a sweet, powdered mineral, smoky, weedy cassis-scented nose. Beautiful sweetness of fruit is present in this medium-bodied, tightly-knit, but gloriously pure, well-delineated Lafite. The 1995 is not as powerful or as massive as the 1996, but it is beautifully made with outstanding credentials, in addition to remarkable promise. Anticipated maturity: 2008-2028.
The 1982 Lafite possesses a dark, dense ruby/purple color with only a subtle lightening at the rim. Spectacular aromatics offer jammy cherry and black fruits intertwined with lead pencil, mineral, and smoky wood scents. Powerful for a Lafite, this wine unfolds to reveal extraordinary richness, purity, and overall symmetry in addition to stunning flavor depth and persistence. The finish lasts for nearly a minute. Plenty of tannin remains, and the wine displays a vibrancy and youthfulness that belie its 18 years of age. The modern day equivalent of Lafite-Rothschild's immortal 1959, the 1982 will enjoy another 30-70 years of life! An amazing achievement! Anticipated maturity: 2007-2070.
The forward 1989 offers the tell-tale fragrance of lead pencils, cedar, and curranty fruit, and, for Lafite, unusually high glycerin and alcohol. The wine is easy to taste and appreciate, as it is rich, medium-bodied, expansive, and more supple and obvious than usual. Speculating when it might be in full blossom is no easy chore given its sexy, sensual yet light style. It is somewhere between the 1953 and 1976 in stylistic terms. Anticipated maturity: 1997-2020.
Rich and balanced. Dark ruby-red color. Very ripe and earthy, its aromas verging on raisin with hints of cedar and tobacco which follow through on the palate. Full-bodied and silky, adding a long, flavorful aftertaste. Give it time. Best after 2004.
Stick your nose in this and it says something? "I am special." Deep and generous aromas of blackberries, fresh tobacco and minerals. It's full-bodied, with big velvety tannins and a superlong finish. Like a fine cashmere sweater. Best after 2010.
The 2001 Lafite Rothschild's deep, saturated plum/purple color is accompanied by lead pencil liqueur-like notes intermixed with sweet red and black currants, plums, and cedar. This blend of 86.5% Cabernet Sauvignon and 13.5% Merlot is a classic example of Lafite. Extremely elegant, medium-bodied, with intense concentration, richness, and sweet tannin, it appears to be on a rapid evolutionary track, at least in comparison to recent Lafite vintages that have been far more backward and powerful. The classy 2001 should be at its finest between 2007-2020.
