The property is named after its 18th century founder Gabriel Ferrierie whose family owned it for generations..One can't miss the Chateau Ferrière vineyards. They are behind stone walls right at the heart of the village of Margaux. There are other plots of land, which slope gently down towards the Chateau Margaux plots, which rise up a ditch further away. From the Chateau which is at the end of the park walkway, the famous "pavillons rouges" mark the limit of the Premier Cru vineyards. With its eight hectares, Ferrière is the Medoc's smallest Cru Classé. The soil is composed of very deep Garonne gravel on chalk marl. It is said in the Medoc region that the vine plants should suffer! 80% Cabernet Sauvignon, 15% Merlot and 5% Petit Verdot express their suffering for the pleasure of connoisseurs worldwide. In 1988 the chateau was bought by Jaques Merlaut who already owned Chateau Chasse-Spleen.Since 1992 huge efforts work and exigence wise have been made at Ferrière, and this wine has surprised professionals by the celerity with which it has come back to the top.It is now run by his daughter Clare Villars. In addition to the grande wine there are two second wines made from the younger grapes .La Dame de Ferriere and Les Remparts de Ferriere
