Chalone Estate Syrah 2008

Member Review by Wine Unfiltered:

Decent Syrah. Red fruit, nicely balanced, slight minerality, good nose. Nothing life shattering. A safe purchase.

Perched in the remote Gavilan Mountain Range, 1,800 feet above California's Salinas Valley, this rugged vineyard sits at the base of an extinct volcano bordering the Pinnacles National Monument. Chalone Vineyard is one of the few wineries in the U.S. growing grapes in limestone-based soils, the same as in Burgundy. The spare, well-drained ground, limited rainfall and low crop levels attracted Dick Graff, who wanted to make top-flight Burgundian-styled Chardonnay. Graff made his first vintage under the Chalone Vineyard label in 1966, producing what became a benchmark for California Chardonnay. Read less

Vintage: 2005 10/22/2010

Chalone’s estate vineyard is 1,800 feet above sea level in the Gavilan Mountains. It’s such a unique and distinctive wine growing spot that it has earned its own AVA. The Syrah vines go deep into the limestone/granite soils searching for water in this arid outback. Temperatures shift from warm to very cool from night to day, slowing maturity and enhancing development of intense flavors and balanced acidity. Only estate-grown fruit is used to make this 2005 Chalone Estate Syrah. A hint of Grenache is blended in and the wine is aged 10 months in French oak barrels to enhance the complex profile. Right now this wine is showing beautiful black fruit and woodsy spice aromas with supple plum and berry notes. The tannins are quite tame and add dimension and mouthfeel to this rich Central Coast red. Grab it while it’s On Sale!!

Smells (and tastes) like melted brownies, but on the palate it shows more chocolate, berry and light vanilla notes that are complex and well-focused. Drink now through 2009.(WS)
