Bierzo, SpainCastro Ventosa Mencia is the short name for a wonderful Spanish red wine gem whose official name is El Castro de Valtuille Mencia Joven. The producer is Bodegas y Vinedos Castro Ventosa and the region is Bierzo, in the northwest of Spain. The grape varietal is 100% Mencia, sourced from 60-year-old vines. Castro Ventosa was founded by the Perez family in 1752 and the family now owns 75 hectares of Mencia vineyards in Bierzo, making them the biggest owners of this varietal within the Bierzo D.O. Raul Perez, who now runs the winery, is a figurehead for Bierzo wines in Spain, renowned for making some of the best wines in the world. Jay Miller for Wine Advocate rated this wine 92 points!Castro Ventosa Mencia is deep purple in color with a nose of raspberries, cherries, mineral and floral notes. Medium-full in body with a soft palate, the wine offers complex flavors of red berries, cherries and spice. It was aged for 4 months in oak barriques. The wine has a smooth, lengthy finish. Enjoy Castro Ventosa Mencia over the next 10-12 years with roast lamb, coq au vin, paella, grilled vegetables and aged cheeses.
