Brunello di Montalcino DOCG 2005

Winemaker's Notes:

Generations of the Rubegni family have farmed the area around Montalcino, well-known for its production of exceptional red wines. Podere La Vigna lies in an excellent position within this area and has belonged to the family since 1958. Today, Adriano Rubegni and his wife supervise production personally and commercialise the products themselves. The farm takes its name from the surrounding hills, which had originally been entered in the land register as Podere la Vigna, and which are well-known for the high quality of grapes they produce At the time of purchase, the vines on the farm had been grown according to a very old method: "trained" to the mulberry tree, locally known as "Testucchio". The vine, therefore, used the Testucchio as a stake. Their knowledge of the area and long experience in cultivating vineyards led the Rubegni family to plant their first specialised vineyard according to modern technical criteria in 1973. The 4 hectares of well-exposed, specialised vineyards with various clones of accurately selected Sangiovese give a top quality production. The lands lie at a height between 320 and 340 m. a.s.l. and have a mixed structure of tufa and clay soil. The plantation layout is 2.80 m. by 0.98 m. with a runner system of plant spacing, which enables the grapes to ripen homogeneously. Summer pruning and thinning of the bunches limit production and enable the grapes as they ripen to reach the optimum level of phenol. Today, the four hectares give a select production of Brunello di Montalcino. The grapes are vinified in the small, well-equipped cellar. Fermentation takes place in stainless steel vats, set at a controlled temperature. The Brunello di Montalcino is matured in Slavonia oak casks, the Rosso di Montalcino in small drums of French oak. Once bottled, the wines are stored for ageing. Future projects include the construction of a new, underground cellar, which will leave the landscape unchanged, and which will be more suitable to contain the entire production of the farm. The present cellar will be used only to age the bottled wine. Read less

Shows loads of new toasty wood on the nose, with intensely ripe fruit. Full-bodied, very chewy and slightly austere from the new wood. But should come around beautifully with bottle age. Best after 2012. Wine Spectator. A Sangiovese Grosso wine from Tuscany in Italy. 2005 Podere La Vigna Brunello di Montalcino 750ml

A powerful and rich wine, with so much dried berry, almost prune character and coffee. Some might find it a little overdone, but I like its opulence. It will mellow with some bottle age. Try after 2013. James Suckling. A Sangiovese Grosso wine from Tuscany in Italy. 2005 Podere La Vigna Brunello di Montalcino 750ml
