Broc Cellars Carignane "Carbonic" Alexander Valley 2010

Member Review by Etty Lewensztain:

Vivid and incredibly fresh, this fabulous Euro-inspired Carignan comes from an ancient 120-year-old vineyard in the Alexander Valley that is farmed dry (without irrigation). This contributes beautiful depth and concentration to the wine, which shows indulgent red berry fruit, and is lifted by a bright core of acidity. Produced using carbonic maceration (hence the name), a technique often used in Beaujolais, and fermented naturally with native yeasts. Super tiny production - only 425 cases were made! Broc Cellars was nothing more than an idea not that long ago, formed by Chris Brockway, about making wines that were “site specific”. Where the wines true character came from using only sustainably, organically, or biodynamically grown grapes from areas that most would consider marginal climates. Believing that vineyards develop ‘true’ character and complexity when they have to struggle to survive. This can come from many different aspects: poor nutrient and water holding capacity, steep slopes, cool temperatures, or from old vines that are dry farmed. Read less

Loved this wine! Concentrated red fruit on the nose. I got a strong cigar box taste on the palate before the wine had fully opened up. The cigar box faded after the bottle had been opened for about 15 minutes and deep notes of red and dark fruit were left. Highly recommended!
