Named an AVA in 2005, Lake County's High Valley appellation is one of California's newest. The valley floor is at 1,800 feet with ridges rising above 3,000 feet in altitude and its soils are a combination of volcanic and alluvial fans. Brassfield's 12.5-acre block of merlot at High Serenity Ranch is planted on benchland in the western hills of High Valley where the soils are known for their excellent drainage and low vigor potential. The resulting wine smells cherry cobbler and new leather. On the palate it's soft and delicate with hints of coriander and sage to support the fruit. Small amounts of cabernet franc and petit verdot are added for structure and color.
