Bonny Doon Vineyard le Vol des Anges 2007
Lightning may not strike twice, but sometimes it sure feels that way. Beeswax Vineyard, which is the source of the roussanne grapes used in both Le Cigare Blanc and Le Vol des Anges, is not a textbook botrytis vineyard; but in 2006 and again in 2007 the Beeswax roussanne developed the noble rot. Nature was allowed to run her course (though certainly with a bit of encouragement), and the result? Pure decadence. Honeycomb, clover blossom, quince paste, peaches, apricots, almonds and even a hint of caramel, all combine into a sweet wine that would satisfy the most fastidious queen bee. As long as the botrytis holds, we will continue to produce this amazing wine, but enjoy it now because you never know what 2008 will bring. That being said, this wine will likely develop more nuts and caramel character if aged, so should your preference lie in that direction, we recommend cellaring for 3-5 years.
Editorial Reviews for Bonny Doon Vineyard le Vol des Anges
Dessert in a glass. This smells remarkable with light honey, tea and gentle smoke notes framing the core of light orange marmalade and more intense dried apricot and peach fruit. A nicely sweet style with a slightly viscous feel but nothing too intense and certainly not cloying. The flavors are heavily in the dried orchard fruit slathered with orange marmalade end of the spectrum though there are nicely nuanced floral and exotic fruit perfumes in the mouth. Soft and caressing finish. 91pts
Nice little nutty and fruity aromas, with pear/apricot body. Very sweet honey on the mouth, not very citric.
Not much of a desert wine drinker but damn, this is good stuff. Lots of honey and nuts on the nose with a superbly sweet smokey complex character. Didn't think something so sweet could be so complex - shows how much I know. Highly recommend this.
Rich, complex nose of almonds and sugars. Intensely sweet and sugary, but with enough acidity to keep it in check. Very fruity - full of peaches, pears and even red apples (a testament to the acids). Very nice.
I guess I'm a sucker for the sweet stuff. This wine was tasty but it would probably give me headache if I drank too much.
