Bodegas Salentein is like a Hollywood film set, writes John Downes MW. “The solemn brick monolith is set on a vast plain of vineyards in the lap of the Andes. Stainless steel glistens within the lofty circular winery, and the amphitheatre below is temperature controlled to provide the perfect scene and environment for the myriad barriques”. The Estate wines, particularly the Merlot and Cabernet Sauvignon, should be fantastic in a few years time. From twenty-five year old vines, wonderfully healthy grapes are transported to the most modern of wineries, fermented in stainless steel tanks and aged in 60% new French oak barrels. Primus Pinot is sans pares, a fine effort for the second vintage.. The wines for the Primus Pinot are sourced from vineyards more than 1200m above sea level. Light tearing of the berries and fermentation at low temperatures are the first stage of a process that includes pumping-overs and maceration to give this wine its special aroma. The fermentation takes place in new French oak vats. The racking of the lees is performed every three months. At the optimum moment, the wine is bottled unfiltered. The aroma of fresh cherries is combined with a touch of vanilla of the new oak. Smooth and creamy in the mouth, with an outstanding complexity.

Perhaps the vintage with the greatest color intensity. Bright red shades. After ageing in French oak barrels and bottle-ageing, this wine has developed a unique bouquet driven by very ripe red, almost black fruits. Oak is not perceived - a good sign of the wine's dominance. Amazingly ample mouth-feel. The true reflection of the valvety descriptor appears domininantly. Well-accomplished medium to high structure. Supple in the mouth, with a long finish.
