Bodegas Castaño Monastrell Yecla 2008

Winemaker's Notes:

Score: 90 Points (Jay Miller) Tasting Notes: This cuv'e from Casta is made from 100% Monastrell (Mourvèdre), sourced from three non-irrigated vineyard sites in Campo Arriba. The vineyards are located at altitudes of 750-850 meters, are composed of limestone soils, and have vines at an average age of 30 years. The wine is fermented and aged in 100% stainless steel. It is released young and is meant to be an easy drinking, everyday wine. It has a bright, fresh raspberry bouquet with dense, textured, cherry flavors on the palate. It is well structured with supple, integrated tannins. This wine is a great match to simple, bistro-style fare but has enough body to hold up to hearty dishes including beef, game, and strong cheeses.

From that moment onward, Ramon did not stop making improvements. It was in the early 80s when he bought the first bottling plant. During the 90's, participation in trade fairs, tastings, and market research trips began with the full incorporation of his three sons: Ramon, Juan Pedro, and Daniel. It was during this period that the recognition and appreciation, both national and internationally, arrived. The courage and determination of a man deeply rooted began to bear fruit. The development of Bodegas Castano is unstoppable, and the improvements are never-ending. The most recent of these was completed in 2002 with the construction of state-of-the-art storage premises: completely air-conditioned, with a new cooling chamber. Read less

Spicy on the nose with notes of licorice, green anise seed, green peppercorn, mint, and lightly roasted blackcurrant and black berry fruit. This enters the mouth with notes of sandalwood and tobacco, wrapped in roasted dark cherry and blackberry fruit. The mid-palate is round and supple, though it is underpinned by significant tannins. While fairly powerful and a touch dense, this retains a certain subtlety to it, layering earthy flavors between notes of vanilla, dark fruit, coffee grinds, licorice and a little juniper spice. There is nothing elegant about this wine and it ends with a little heat and formidable if ripe tannins, but this is quite appealing for its restrained example of what Monastrell can deliver. 88pts

Good nutty spiciness on the nose, with dark berries. The mouth is mildly tannic, but not enough to hold the shape, and the life of the wine is cut short. I would like it if the wine was bolder, since there are some good redeemable aromatics in there.

Recently purchased at $7.95. Medium-bodied wine with dark red cherry color. Smooth on the palate with mild tannins. A bit of spice and fruit on the palate. Nice everyday wine.

Have to agree with carpita, i do wish this wine was bolder. the mild tannins went beautifully with the whole wheat baquette and vermont white cheddar and bleu cheese i paired with this wine. if you havent tried it this way i highly recommend it, brings a whole new life to the wine. side note, i baked the cheese for 5 minutes at 425 in the oven before serving, really allowed the cheese to open up and the wine just delved right in to really complement

Monastrell is my favorite grape. Why they had to add fruit juice, seriously - fruit juice to this wine is beyond me. great dissapointment.

For the price this is an excellent wine and I will keep a bottle or two around while it is available, I suggest you do the same. Carpita has the taste profile covered...spicy, a little tannic... decidedly varietal

Dark purple. Luscious blackberry and blueberry aromas are at once expansive and precise, with sexy floral and spice qualities adding complexity. Juicy dark fruit flavors deliver a sexy wallop of sweetness, with no rough edges or animal, earth or herbal character. This very fresh wine finishes with impressive cling and length. And the price is unreal.

Rubinrote Farbe, intensive Aromen schwarzer Kirschen, Heidel-, Brom- und Johannisbeeren. Am Gaumen fruchtig, frisch mit lebhaften, gut eingebundenen Tanninen, angenehmer Abgang.
