Bodegas Ateca Old Vine Garnacha Calatayud 2007
RiceSelect's creamy Arborio gets blended with sweet potato, coconut milk and vanilla to create this decadent cheesecake. Pairs well with Saunternes; a white dessert wine that has hints of coconut from aging in oak barrels.
Dark chocolate shavings on the nose, creamy. Very dark color. Warmth on the back end. Still a little young, will definitely evolve over time. Good balance of fruit. A little spice on the attack. Not a complex wine. Tastes sort of like a "Foret Noir Gateau." Good value for the price. WineSpectator gave it a 90. Tasted in Episode 4 of our show.
A good Garnacha ... no question. The color is a shimmering garnet/ruby right to the edge. It's a fruity, spicy, medium-bodied wine with supple tannins and classic Garnacha DNA. Loads of black cherry juice with bits of blackberry and plum. Even though the alcohol content is high, it's very light on its feet and not at all hot. Old vines aren't always better ... just different ... and in this case the altitude and age of the plantings provides a very polished and balanced profile with loads of flavor.
2. 2007 Atteca Old Vines Garnacha – Calatayud, Spain (14.5%) – Color: inky, purple. Nose: rich, sweet, vanilla, toasty, Taste: had to decant for an hour and a half simply to drink, medium to high tannins, very hot (alcohol), acidic, blackberry, weak finish overpowered by alcohol/acidity Lamarr: B (keeps me entertained, very strong, [God, that’s oaky], slightly overwhelming, you know, take away the oak and I could mistake it for a malbec) Hector: B (fan of the oakiness/nose, a little to acidic, which takes away from the fruit, a slight chemical flavor, but can’t put my finger on it, may go better with food, no finish) Alastor: C+ (nice nose, palate a tad disappointing Wanda: B (could smell the vanilla nose all day long, acidity kills the taste, cleans the sinuses like wasabi)
Delicious - i would drink this again. Purchased off the 90 point scale (yes, I'm a sucker). Perhaps the effect is the placebo effect and I love the way it makes me feel... mellow, relaxed, happy... no, that isn't all wines. As for the characteristics....I'd have to say bold (from my coffee descriptions)...ripe, a bit off balance, and not off-putting (on the finish)....plums...berry-ish....dark, fruit sensations... I enjoyed this out of the bottle the day I purchased it...I didn't need a meal and I could enjoy it with a nice red meat....
Deep berries, cedar, velvet, good value
A bit of a sharpness to this one. An almost smoky aroma. Flavors of blackberry, and more blackberry.
deep fruit flavors. loved the oakiness.
