Blackbird Vineyards Merlot Blend Napa Valley Arriviste 2011

Winemaker's Notes:

The 2011 Arriviste is an alluring, salmon red-colored rosé of Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot, and Cabernet Franc. On the nose, strawberry and iris aromas meld with notes of orange zest. The wine displays enticing flavors of red cherry and blueberry on the mid-palate, carrying a clean, bright acidity on to the lingering finish. The 2011 Napa Valley harvest was challenging due to much rainfall, but allowed for the grapes to be picked at lower alcohol levels than in the past, producing this spectacular rosé.

Smells fruity in a black cherry way, with some charcoal and earth nuances and a top note of mint. A little sweet on entry but also very high in acidity, so the suggestion of sweetness adds nice balance. This is a large scaled rosé, deep with rich black cherry and blackberry fruit that really penetrate the palate. The finish is nicely bright with a sour cherry refrain and a little spice on the finale, almost a touch peppery. Big but very well done. Not what I expect from a rosé, but there’s no arguing the appeal. 91pts

This a great wine for sipping or eating and pairs well with many foods. If you are in Napa, stop by Norman Rose Tavern and try it with their lamb burger...delish! The owner suggested that pairing on my first trip to this establishment and it is right on. Plus they sell it by the bottle with little mark-up over retail. Stop by Maisonry in Yountville to taste all the offerings from Blackbird, you will be glad you did.

Smooth, sweet, but with a surprisingly heavy body.

Love this surprising rose! Big weighty notes of strawberry, black cherry, and watermelon. Smooth, weighty, and slightly sweet on the plate, all well balanced by well integrated acid. Some mineralogy, almost ever so slightly saline. A huge, complex rose, this one was definitely more fullbodied thank expected. A great, substantial rose.

fruit forward on the nose combined with juicy oranges, peach, a bit of bright strawberries and raspberries, some watermelon. allows for a fruitier palate too with some minerality. balanced nicely with acidity

Incredibly fruity on the nose with an almost applesaucey quality. Very large in the mouth with strong fruit flavors and great mouth feel, just a touch of viscosity. A bit of sweetness here makes me want to eat something salty.
