Winemaker's Notes:

A mouth full of fruit that is sweet, round and complex which is supported by nice acidity and supple ripe tannins, this Cabernet Sauvignon highlights Knights Valley’s characteristically bright cherry fruit and sweet vanilla oak and pie spice aromas.

It is impossible to take Beringer’s long history lightly. With their 215 acre plot of land purchased in 1875 and the winery founded in 1876, Jacob and Frederick Beringer’s winery is the oldest continually operating winery in Napa Valley. In 2001, it was named a historic district in the National Register for Historic Places. Current winemaker Laurie Hook and winemaster Ed Sbragia continue to draw from over a dozen vineyards to create world-class wines from varying soil compositions and climates. The winery managed to survive, and even thrive, during Prohibition by selling sacramental wines with a federal license. Since the wine was being made for religious purposes, it was legal! A unique aspect of Beringer is the tunnel system that was carved into the side of Spring Mountain around 1880. Chinese immigrant workers, the same workers that helped build the Trans-Continental Railroad, spent years hand-chiseling the 1,200 feet of tunnels. To this day, the tunnels act as a natural insulator, keeping the temperature between 58 and 60 degrees year-round, ideal for storing wine. Read less

Knights Valley lives up to its name. This is a noble Cabernet that's well balanced, and free of any unpleasant side notes. The fruit aroma and palate are superb, and there's a hint of anise that completes the finish.

A little bit of dark fruit. Lots of herb, which I LOVE. And nice, rich woods like oak, juniper or cedar, and just a touch of vanilla. Sweet earth! MINERAL. I really love this cabernet. I suspect it has something to do with being grown in volcanic soils in Knights Valley. And the price (around $20) is great. This is my special treat wine that I get about once a month or so.

A soft, sweet vintage from Beringer's vineyards in the hills northwest of Calistoga, this shows some coffee and cocoa-like details in tits tannins. The super-ripe fruit flavors may develop more complexity with a year or two in bottle.

An excellent, medium-weight California wine thatrsquo;s firm and ripe at a good price. Has a fleshy texture and spice, cedar, currant and mineral aromas and flavors. All its elements are smoothly shaped together, and it should continue to improve through 1999.

As the following note indicates, all of the 1997s possess denser, more opaque colors, riper fruit, and mote body, volume, and expressive personalities than their 1998 counterparts. The 1997 Knightrsquo;s Valley Cabernet Sauvignon is an excellent introduction to Beringerrsquo;s style. It offers black fruits, a touch of licorice and cedar, a supple texture, medium to full body, and a soft finish. Drink this delicious Cabernet during its first decade of life.

Firm, intense and concentrated, with spicy, loamy earth, dried berry, sage and herbal scents. Full-bodied, ending with chewy tannins and a dash of black licorice. Drink now through 2015.

Good full medium ruby. Slightly medicinal aromas and flavors of dark plum and licorice. Broad on the palate but rather backward today and not yet revealing much. The dark plum character carries through to the firmly tannic finish.

Good deep, bright ruby. Black cherry, licorice and fresh herbs on the slightly medicinal nose. At once dense and juicy, with lively acidity and a firm tannic spine keeping the bright dark berry and licorice flavors under wraps today. This has good weight and balance and finishes with broad, serious, building tannins that call for a year or two of patience. Already showing a bit of flesh, but give this another year or two to round out in bottle.

Black currant richness expands beyond the tailored restraint of this wine's structure, giving a sense of elegance and generosity at once. The tannins have a crisp cut, the fruit plenty of juice. A pungent hint of tobacco and herbs places it with roast lamb.
