Bellum Monastrell Yecla Providencia 2005

External Review by Premium Wine & Spirits:

The 2004 Bellum Providencia raises the bar even higher. Made from over 50-year-old Monastrell vines and aged 8 months in French oak, it yields a remarkable aromatic array of lavender, blue and black fruits, blackberry liqueur, and grilled meat. Generously layered on the palate, this smoothly-textured wine has no hard edges. Hedonistically styled, readers who are not into pleasure should beware of this wine. It will drink well for 4ndash;6 years for those able to exercise self-control. The Bellum project, in which Ole Imports is involved, started in 2002. It is dedicated to showing what can be achieved from 100% old-vine Monastrell in the up-and-coming D.O. of Yecla. It goes without saying that the price-to-quality relationship of these wines in extraordinary.

Layered Rice Pudding

RiceSelect's fragrant Jasmati® is blended with eggs, milk and fall's favorite spices, cinnamon and nutmeg, to create a delicious rice pudding, which is layered on top of fluffy cream cheese and abuttery pecan crust. Pairs well with a bold, tawny port with flavors of dried fruits, nuts, and spices.

The Bellum cuvees are a joint project between the Candela family that owns Barahonda and importer Patrick Mata. The wines are meant to showcase the tremendous upside potential of Yeclarsquo;s Mourvedre vineyards. The 2003 Bellum Providencia (an 800-case cuvee of 100% old vine Mourvedre) spent ten months in both French and American oak. It brings to mind what a Bandol might taste like if you took away all the rusticity, under-ripeness, and brett. A dense ruby/purple color is accompanied by sumptuously pure aromas of roasted meats, blueberries, black raspberries, and cherries. Full-bodied, with loads of structure, sweet tannin, impressive density as well as purity, and a 40+ second finish, this is an amazing effort. Moreover, its price makes it one of the wine steals of the century. It should drink well for 4ndash;5 years. This estate is one of the top discoveries of all my tastings.

Deep red. Ripe cherry and blackcurrant aromas are complicated by smoky bacon, licorice and cured tobacco. Deep and brooding, with slow-to-open dark fruit flavors and chunky tannins. Smooths out on the finish, which is impressively broad and long. Give this a year or two to stretch itself out.

This fruit-bomb is made exclusively from Monastrell (or Mourvandegrave;dre) from 50+ year old, dry-farmed vines. It delivers layers of blue and black fruits in an almost liqueur-like fashion with a creamy vanilla overtone repeating. Delicious and addictive!

Nice ruby color turning to purple. Nose of dark fruits interwoven with earthy meats. Ripe, bright fruit and meatiness carry over to the palate and their balance, along with sweet tannins, make this wine seamless.
