Behrens & Hitchcock Ode To Picasso 2009

External Review:

(A blend of 40% Syrah, 32% Cabernet Sauvignon, 15% Petite Verdot, 8% Cabernet Franc and 5% Merlot) Deep, bright ruby. Super ripe but vibrant nose combines black fruits, dark chocolate, violet and meat. Distinctly liqueur-like in the mouth, with super concentrated flavors of kirsch, violet pastille, menthol and chocolate. A powerful, compellingly rich wine thatrsquo;s sweet but dry in the way of so many Napa Valley bottlings from very ripe years. Finishes with big, broad tannins and excellent length.

A basement, in Humboldt County, outfitted with just two dairy tanks, was the humble beginning of our winery. Of this tiny, dug out space, Les assured Joe Bob that, “We have all the room we will ever need.” However, the roots of Behrens & Hitchcock are found in Folie Douce, the award-winning restaurant Lisa Drinkward and Les Behrens launched in 1991 in Arcata, California. While Lisa was developing an incredible, French-inspired menu, Les was busy cultivating a superb wine list and cellar which eventually received the Wine Spectator’s Award of Excellence. In the course of creating the wine list, Les met many winemakers and received encouragement from several to begin making his own wine. The idea, which seemed almost nonsensical at first, quickly began to take root in Les’ mind. Read less

The Dead Cat cuveehellip; oh, Irsquo;m sorry, I mean the 2001 Ode To Picasso (their homage to a deceased pet) is a blend of 40% Syrah, 32% Cabernet Sauvignon, 15% Petit Verdot, 8% Cabernet Franc, and 5% Merlot (who thinks up these blends?). No European producer would dare mix all this stuff together because ofhellip; traditionhellip; but these disrespectful adult hippies got it right. Itrsquo;s all about creativity, singularity, and producing awesome wineshellip; like this one. Incredible aromas of creosote, blackberries, creme de cassis, acacia flowers, and underbrush soar from the glass. Superb texture, great purity (a characteristics of all B and H wines), and terrific length characterize this wine. It will be impossible to resist over the next 10ndash;15 years. Go for it! Drink 2003ndash;2018.

The 2000 Ode to Picasso (a 375-case blend of 53% Cabernet Sauvignon, 27% Merlot, and 20% Syrah) is a blockbuster, exotic, hedonistic turn-on offering glorious levels of fruit, glycerin, and explosive aromatics. It should be delicious young yet last for 10andndash;15 years.

Bright ruby-red. Slightly high-toned aromas of crushed blackberry, violet, tar and spices. Juicy, intense and bright, with black fruit, tar and bitter chocolate flavors nicely framed by fresh acids. At once chewy and juicy, with good density and cut. Cool suggestion of medicinal licorice. Finishes with torrefaction notes of tar and oak char.

The lavishly endowed 1999 Ode to Picasso (a 368-case blend of 32% Syrah, 31% Cabernet Sauvignon, 25% Merlot, and 12% Cabernet Franc, aged in 30% new French oak, and named after a deceased pet cat) offers a blue/purple color as well as a full-bodied, opulent personality. Aromas and flavors of blackberries and blueberries are accompanied by huge levels of glycerin, extraordinary purity and palate presence, sweet tannin, and unobtrusive acidity. Enjoy it over the next 8ndash;10 years.

A 265-case blend of 54% Merlot, 25% Petit Verdot, and the rest Cabernet Sauvignon, Cabernet Franc, and Syrah, the impressively concentrated 2004 B and H Ode to Picasso offers hints of charcoal, graphite, black raspberries, blueberries, and cherries. The complex aromatics are followed by a wine with terrific fruit, a lush, opulent attack and mid-palate, and a heady finish. This beautiful red should drink nicely for 5ndash;7 years.
