Founded in 1994 by Tom and Steve Beckmen, Beckmen Vineyards is a family-run, estate winery located in Santa Barbara County's Santa Ynez Valley. Since its founding, Beckmen Vineyards has emerged as one of North America's premier producers of Rhone varietal wines, while also helping to establish Santa Barbara County as one of California's most highly regarded winegrowing regions. Eager to return to his farming roots, and convinced of the Santa Ynez Valley's vast potential to produce world-class wines, Tom Beckmen began searching for promising vineyard property in the early '90s. He found what he was looking for on a 40-acre parcel of land with an existing small winery. There he established Beckmen Vineyards. Working together, Tom and Steve began revitalizing the site. Convinced that the vineyard had been planted incorrectly, they painstakingly removed the 16 original acres of vines, and replanted the vineyard with carefully selected varietals, clones and rootstocks. Committed to building a world-class estate-vineyard program, the Beckmens also purchased a spectacular, unplanted 365-acre Santa Ynez Valley ranch in 1996. Naming it Purisima Mountain Vineyard, Tom and Steve began a meticulous planting process designed to maintain the natural diversity of the site. With an ideal climate and rare limestone subsoils similar to those found in Cote Rotie and Chateauneuf du Pape, the vineyard has proven perfect for producing a range of stunning Rhone varietals, especially Syrah and Grenache. Under the care and guidance of Tom and Steve, Purisima Mountain Vineyard has earned acclaim as one of California's great Rhone-varietal vineyards. Adding to its reputation as one of the most meticulously cultivated winegrowing sites in all of Santa Barbara County, the vineyard has been farmed 100 percent biodynamically since 2006. Reflecting a passion for quality and a belief in the natural character of the land, the adoption of biodynamic farming practices has only reinforced Steve's vineyard-focused style of winemaking. Believing that the wine in the bottle begins in the soil, Steve and the winemaking team craft wines that capture the unique terroir of Purisima Mountain. Beckmen Vineyards produces a full line of exceptional estate-grown Rhone varietals including Syrah, Grenache, Grenache Blanc, Grenache Rose, Marsanne, and the Cuvee Le Bec blend. It also produces small quantities of exceptional Cabernet Sauvignon and Sauvignon Blanc. Hailed for the excellence of its portfolio, Beckmen Vineyards was named Food & Wine's "Most Promising Winery" in the magazine's 2000 American Wine Awards. Since then, Beckmen Vineyards has lived up to that promise. In 2007, it was selected as one of the "Top 100 Wineries" in the world by Wine & Spirits magazine. Read less

An exciting Southern Rhone style blend from California, great out of the bottle with an authentic nose, richer fruit, and similar balance and varietal blend to its southern French counterparts. Expresses a California terroir not a French one; seems to settle down and become well-balanced much more quickly after opening than the French equivalents which can take time to integrate and smooth out. Has an cocoa-coffee and olive-herb finish not unlike the CdR blends. Nose of fruit and floral, later also cocoa and coffee, with mouthfuls of semi-dry smooth rich dark red and blue fruit with hints of smoke, spice, and pepper in the mouth, medium-plus weight, well-integrated tannins and acid, and a rich ripe fruity finish with a bit of soil and licorice that fades to olives or nut oil much like the French style. Tasted great with a garlicky mediterranean onion-pasta with basil. Prepare for the next "Freedom fries" embargo (hopefully that won't happen) and stock up on this 2007.

Very forward fruit, but without that bomb that coats your tongue and stops you from savoring the subtle tannic bite on the finish. A real pleasure to drink.

A very "Rhone" nose, almost CdP. A lot of earth to it, with dark berry fruit coming through. Massive attack, with somewhat harsh acidity. Flavors of blackberry and earth, with a touch of saddle leather. A bit hot on the finish, and that acidity sizzles. Perhaps a tad too young yet? Poured the rest in the decanter and will let it sit for a couple hours and revisit. After 6 hours in the decanter, the wine got worse...very acidic and bitter. Hot alcohol flavors on the finish. This definitely needs another year or two. Even 6 hours decanting didn't help this one. Ouch.

I came across this wine at new wine bar that recently opened in my hometown of Carpinteria. I bought it because it was under twenty dollars, and the story sold me. "The Grenache attacks the frong palate and fills the aromatics with bright berry fruit, the Mourvedre and Syrah fill the mid-palate, and finnish darkening the fruit, adding spice, while the Counoise provides a supple silky texture. Yum!! Most story lines are bs as far as I'm concerned but this one delivers. Try it. Very moderate tannins and a bit of sweet very subtle smoke with lots of berry fruit. Not sure what this would par well with, don't bother trying, just open up and enjoy with intimates or just plain good friends. Definitely a first or early dating winner.

Everything came together to make this Grenache-based Rhône blend rich and delicious. It possesses mouthwateringly jammy flavors of cherries, chocolate and herbs, and is dry and balanced. The smooth texture makes it feel as swanky as wines costing far more. This is a great price for what you get.

A fine value, the 2002 Cuvee Le Bec is a blend of 46% Grenache, 23% Mourvedre, 22% Syrah, and 9% Counoise. Smoky, animal, and earthy notes intermixed with black cherry and currant fruit aromas jump from the glass of this medium ruby-colored offering. Elegant, plush, and juicy, with attractive fruit levels but no hard edges, this is Beckmen's interpretation of a tasty Cotes du Rhone. Consume it over the next 1-3 years.

Inky ruby. Cherry-vanilla, cola and dark berries on the nose. Supple and appealingly sweet, with deep black raspberry and cherry compote flavors and gentle tannins. The cola note resonates on the long, spicy, energetic finish. This is complex enough to enjoy now.

The 2009 Cuvee Le Bec is a fabulous wine for the money. Wild cherries, flowers and smoke are some of the notes that jump from the glass in this powerful red. Readers wonrsquo;t find a ton of finesse here, but the wine compensates for that with its superb drinkability. Sweet red fruit and licorice add complexity on the finish in a rustic wine that is ideal for everyday drinking. The Cuvee Le Bec is 45% Grenache, 34% Syrah, 14% Mourvedre and 7% Counoise. Anticipated maturity: 2011ndash;2014.

Ample berry fruit marks this full-bodied red wine, which is dry, with good tannins and soft acids. It's a Châteauneuf wannabe, a blend of Grenache, Syrah, Mourvèdre and Counoise. Simple and direct, it will complement grilled meats.

Beckmen is producing better and better wines from its large holdings on the Purisima Mountain in Santa Ynez. The 2001 Cuvée Le Bec, a 3,000 case blend of Grenache (47%), Syrah (34%), Mourvèdre (12%), and Counoise (7%), exhibits a Côtes du Rhône-like perfume of licorice, kirsch liqueur, and spice. Both neophites and connoisseurs will enjoy its medium-bodied, nicely-textured, complex, fleshy mouthfeel. Enjoy this Mediterranean-styled dry red over the next 2-3 years.
