AA Badenhorst Family Wines are grown, made and matured on Kalmoesfontein farm in the Swartland appellation of South Africa. The 28ha of old bushvines grow in the Siebritskloof part of the Paardeberg mountain. The property is owned by the dynamic and good looking cousins Hein and Adi Badenhorst. They are originally from Constantia. Their grandfather was the farm manager of Groot Constantia for 46 years. Their fathers were born there and farmed together in Constantia, during the days when people still ate fresh vegetables and Hanepoot grapes, drank Cinsault and there were a lot less traffic lights and hippies still had a presence. Together these two have restored a neglected cellar on the farm that was last used in the 1930′s to make natural wines in the traditional manner. Read less

A blend of 74% Shiraz, 10% Cinsault plus Grenache, Carignan and Mourvedre aged for 14 months in old French casks, the entry-level 2010 Secateurs Red Blend has ripe raspberry, blackberry and wild hedgerow on the nose that is well defined and very natural. The palate is medium-bodied, supple on the entry with juicy bright red berries, raspberry, red currant and has a touch of citrus peel lending freshness and vitality. Drink nowandndash;2013.

A complex blend of 75% Shiraz, 10% Cinsault, 8% Cab Sauv, 6% Gren and 1% each of Carignan and Mourvandegrave;dre, this is a concentrated and flavorful selection thatandrsquo;s brimming with raspberry sauce and dark berry fruit aromas and flavors. Framed by black tea, sweet spice and vanilla bean accents, the mouth is firmly structured with medium tannins and acidity, ending on a soft, roasty note.

Juicy, displaying a core of crushed plum, blackberry and black cherry fruit held together by bittersweet cocoa and graphite notes. The fresh, racy finish then takes over. Very solid. Shiraz, Cabernet Sauvignon, Cinsault, Mourvandegrave;dre, Grenache and Carignan. Drink now.

I have always encouraged wine consumers to pay close attention to South African wines, and the Badenhorst Secateurs is a shining example why. Rich and spicy on the nose; the body opens to classic Rhandocirc;ne notes of earth, smoke, and dark, jammy fruit. A blend of Shiraz, Grenache, Cabernet Sauvignon, Cinsault and Carignan, and a great representation of the elegance (and value) of South African wines.
