Atalon Cabernet Sauvignon Napa Valley 2012

Winemaker's Notes:

2012 is a great year for Cabernet in Napa. My goal is to make a soft approachable Cabernet that is elegant yet impactful. The 2012 Atalon Cabernet Sauvignon is opaque dark ruby in color. There is a sweetness of dark fruit. Black cherry, blackberry, currant and plum lead the way to cocoa powder, spice and integrated oak. It has great depth and richness of black fruit. Soft, elegant, velvety and juicy with refined tannins and a long finish.

With its recent debut, Atalon has emerged on the wine scene with a provenance firmly rooted in the Napa Valley. The soul of the Atalon story is a ghost winery dating back to 1888. Built by General W.S. Keyes, the white-stone building atop Howell Mountain claims a stake in Napa Valley viticultural lore. At the turn of the twentieth century, General Keyes was producing wines considered to be among the best in Napa County from this old landmark. From the 1970's the Cabernet Sauvignon vines surrounding the winery helped to establish the reputation of several boutique Napa wineries, including Liparita, Duckhorn and La Jota. In 1996 the famed Howell Mountain property was renamed the Keyes Vineyard in honor of the early farmer's pioneering viticultural contributions. Today, the historic ghost winery stands as a strong reminder of a 150-year old tradition of growing wine grapes within the thirty-mile stretch of the Napa Valley frontier. In 1997, Atalon was created to revive the vineyard's past accomplishments and to build on the area's reputation for producing remarkable red wines. Although inspired by ghosts long gone, Atalon wines reflect a modern understanding of farming Napa's rugged mountains and valleys for the most balanced and expressive wines. To integrate the diverse flavors found throughout the Napa Valley, the wines take us beyond the ridges of Howell Mountain into the broader domain of neighboring appellations. Atalon wines are a comprehensive exploration of the Napa Valley appellation. Drawing fruit from selected vineyards, the wines are a composite of vineyards stretching from the rolling hills of Napa-Carneros in the south to the peaks of Howell Mountain in the north. Atalon is dedicated to the true essence and flavor of the Napa Valley, a distinction defined by Cabernet Sauvignon and Merlot. Vineyards are chosen for proven quality from the best known districts known to grow high quality Cabernet Sauvignon and Merlot, including Oakville, Rutherford, Mount Veeder, Atlas Peak, Napa Carneros and Howell Mountain. Atalon produces two tiers of wine: a Napa Valley designated Cabernet Sauvignon and Merlot and a Mountain Estate designated Cabernet Sauvignon and Merlot. The Napa Valley wines are packed with ripe, opulent fruit, gentle tannins and rich textures long associated with the Napa Valley. The Mountain Estate wines are focused expressions of mountain fruit - dense, powerful with ripe flavors and bold structure. Read less

Dark chocolate, blackberry and plum aromas are quite pronounced and elegant. Full and round in the mouth, slightly dusty with chewy tannins. Flavors are deep and rich, with blackberry, black current leading the way and mellowing into rich cocoa, coffee and molasses flavors. Finishes velvety and soft with a bit of a tannic bite.

Purply color in the glass. Kind of a musky funk on the nose. Initial taste is quite tart. Then I get lots of tannin. Only after that do I get some cassis flavor. I don't know about this one. I don't get it. Tanzer, Parker and Wine Enthusiast ive this wine good ratings. To me it is completely unbalanced. I get a heavy musk, again, on the finish. Maybe some O2 will help it. US$23.99 at Costco in Chino Hills. 3/25/14 Amendment: OK, on day two, I am enjoying this wine a bit more. Flavors, acid and tannin appear to be integrated, now.

Rich cassis nose with hints of mint and oak vanilla. On the palate, sweet red berry fruit with flowers and spices. Nice wine driven by rich, red currant and a nice texture. Lingers nicely. Tasty wine. 89 pts. 4/6/13

Outstanding Cabernet. In the Glass it opens up and shows it's elegant layers. Enjoying it slowly is rewarding! Wow!

A red with fresh, sweet strawberry and rose on the nose and palate. Full body with soft, velvety tannins and a gentle finish. Drink or hold.

Dating back to 1888 and built by General W.S. Keyes, the white-stone building atop Howell Mountain that is now Atalon, claims a stake in Napa Valley viticultural lore. At the turn of the twentieth century, General Keyes was producing wines considered to be among the best in Napa County from this old landmark. The famed Howell Mountain property was acquired by Jess Jackson family in 1996 and renamed the Keyes Vineyard in honor of the early farmer's pioneering viticultural contributions. Today, the historic winery stands as a strong reminder of a 150-year old tradition of growing wine grapes within the thirty-mile stretch of the Napa Valley. From the outstanding 2012 vintage this Atalon Cab is 94% Cabernet Sauvignon and 6% Merlot. The grapes were sourced from Coombsville, Oakville, Atlas Peak, Rutherford and Mt. Veeder. It aged in 35% new French oak barrels for 14 months. James Suckling scored it 91 points saying "A red with fresh, sweet strawberry and rose on the nose and palate. Full body with soft, velvety tannins and a gentle finish. Drink or hold." and Tasting Panel Magazine scored it 93 points saying "Dark ruby color; soft and smooth plum and berry nose; clean and classic with rich fruit and fine structure; velvety texture and a long, deep finish."

Bright red-ruby. Musky black raspberry, blackberry, licorice, menthol and oak on the nose. Distinctly tighter and less pliant now than the Pauline’s Cuvee, displaying a touch of medicinal reserve to the sappy dark berry, violet and menthol flavors. Shows serious spine without coming off as hard: I’d give this persistent cabernet a year or two to mellow in bottle.

This wine has it all: soft red fruit, tart acidity, a warm, spicy grip to the clay-like tannins. Yet all the elements feel a little unrelated, needing time in the bottle to integrate.

Atalon’s 2010 Cabernet Sauvignon is fleshy and generous, with plenty of fruit and terrific overall balance, not to mention considerable early appeal. Hints of tobacco, dried herbs and incense add complexity on the finish. This is a very solid wine for the money. The 2010 is 76% Cabernet Sauvignon, 15% Merlot, 5% Malbec and 3% Petite Verdot, 1% Cabernet Franc. Anticipated maturity: 2012–2021.

This is a good value. It’s tannins, weight and intensity of cassis-liqueur flavor brings it right up there with some of Napa’s more expensive Cabs. Rich and flashy for drinking now and over the next 4–5 years.
