Argyle Pinot Noir Nuthouse 2013

Editorial Review by Gregory Dal Piaz:

A bit creamy on the nose with a lovely citrus and floral base that screams orange rind and blossoms. the red fruit and an earthy edge moves in with a little bit of air. Fresh and crisp in the mouth with a hint of orange cream accenting the bright raspberry fruit. There are enough tannins here to reward cellaring for a bit but they are very finely textured so this is supple enough to enjoy today as well. It's an easy, approachable style that delivers plenty of satisfaction, my only beef if that it finishes a bit short at the moment. 91pts

Prospecting the New World's coolest latitudes, Brian Croser and Rollin Soles staked a claim in Oregon's Willamette Valley, a place ideal for late season ripened Pinot Noir and Chardonnay fruit. Since 1987, Argyle Winery has produced world-class methode champenoise Sparkling wine, barrel fermented Chardonnay and 'silky' textured Pinot Noir from low yielding vines on winery farmed hillside slopes. Argyle was named "OREGON'S PREMIER WINERY" by Wine Spectator in 2000. Argyle farms three vineyards: Knudsen Vineyard, Stoller Vineyard and Lone Star Vineyard. The 120 acre Knudsen Vineyard was first planted between 1972 & 1974. The high elevation blocks of this landmark Dundee Hills site are key components in Argyle's sparkling wines. Knudsen provides Argyle a mix of old vine blocks and new high density blocks planted with "Old World" Dijon clones. Just south of Knudsen Vineyard in the Dundee Hills sits Stoller Vineyard. First planted in 1995, Stoller, like Knudsen, is planted using state of the art viticultural techniques. Stoller Vineyard has produced some of Oregon's finest Pinot Noir and Chardonnay. In 1996 Argyle purchased a spectacular 160 acre vineyard site in the east slopes of Eola Hills, known as Lone Star Vineyard. Located 15 miles south of Argyle's winery in Dundee, this warm site is planted primarily to Dijon clones of Pinot Noir. This vineyard has the potential to be one of Oregon's best Pinot Noir vineyards. All grapes are hand harvested into small baskets and transported to the winery. Grapes are chilled overnight to 35F before crushing the next day. Chilling preserves the ripe fruit characteristics and naturally limits oxidation. Read less

There's nothing wrong with this wine. Not very earthy for a pinot. Very light too. I enjoyed it, but could do better for the money.

Outstanding wine! Aromatic berry with spice mixed into earthy minerals & slight cedar taste. Very bold and all-encompassing experience. Has to be tried to be truly understood.

In homage to our "squirrel friendly" heritage, we designate those wines that branch off into rare and unique styles, "Nuthouse". The term "Nuthouse" originated from our winery's history as a hazelnut processing plant.

WA 92pts. - WS 92pts. - Winemaker Notes - Here's a wine that will require some time to sit back and ponder over. The obvious notes on the nose of big juicy sweet Oregon blackberries and Rainier cherries have layers of summer cedar forest, strawberry rhubarb cobbler, and roses so deeply red they hurt adding aromatic complexities. Richness is exuded by this wine that has a palate full of berries fresh off the vine and exotic Asian spices, but with a graceful elegance that is anything but cumbersome. It is a rare and beautiful thing to find a Pinot Noir with this much power that still maintains the balance and finesse that defines the best that the varietal can be.

Light and distinctive for its slightly candied currant and guava flavors, picking up an attractive lime blossom note as the finish lingers effortlessly. Drink now through 2018. 3,200 cases made. -HS Wine Spectator. A Pinot Noir wine from Oregon in USA. 2008 Argyle Pinot Noir Nuthouse 750ml

International Wine Cellar ReviewRated 90Medium red. Rich cherry, blackberry and chocolate aromas expand in the glass and gain an exotic incense quality. Creamy dark fruit flavors offer palate-staining concentration, with building spiciness and gentle tannins adding support. Finishes with good spicy lift and excellent persistence, with the blackberry flavor repeating.Wine Tasting NotesThe aroma is tumescent with BLUEBERRY fruit! Blended with this wonderful robust blue fruit one can find Moroccan spices, a hint of butterscotch, and believe it or not a sense of gravel earthiness. As the aroma implies and promises, the flavor is concentrated blueberry and blackberry juice, which aids integration of nice spice flavored French oak. The palate is rich, creamy, and super juicy! This whopper of a wine seems to have everything. Rocky earthiness, black forest cake, and a surprise raspberry to red cherry flavor in the long finish.
