As well as traditional and native varietals such as Barbera, Dolcetto, Nebbiolo, Cortese, Arneis and Moscato we also grow the less common Brachetto and Freisa alongside more cosmopolitan, renowned grapes as Merlot, Cabernet and Chardonnay. In this section you can read about two of our most recently acquired vineyards, Il Cascinone and La Battistina, as well as learning some of the basics of viticulture: what influences our choice of site and some of the traditional Piemonte varietals that we grow on our estates. Our vineyards are situated in the major areas of the Langhe, Monferrato, Roero and in Gavi. You can find out more about these regions of Piemonte in the section on Major Viticultural Zones. Absolutely wonderful wine. Fresh, light and fruity. Haven't tried a bad Gavi yet but this ranks amongst the best - and I 've been drinking Gavi for years. Comparable to Chablis' at 3 times the price.

My absolute favorite alternative to Pinot Grigio is always Gavi. With light-bodied, crisp citrus fruit and a lovely mineral base, the Araldica is excellent with anything in the seafood/shellfish family, though we also love it with a fish fry or a salad, or on its own as a before-dinner cocktail white.

The 2009 Gavi La Luciana flows from the glass with clean, mineral-infused white peaches and flowers. This focused, mid-weight Gavi is best enjoyed with lighter dishes. Anticipated maturity: 2010ndash;2012.

This fresh, lively dry white is made from the Cortese grape. Look for lots of juicy lemon and lime citrus fruit, minerally overtones and a crisp, dry finish. Take a break from Pinot Grigio - Gavis are excellent aperitifs, and pair much better with light dishes.

The 2008 Gavi La Luciana is a gorgeous, refined white at this level, with pretty notes of perfumed green apples, mint and sweet spices. The wine offers excellent persistence and a long, refreshing finish. This is a delicious, refined Gavi to enjoy over the next year or two. Anticipated maturity: 2009ndash;2011.

Anticipated maturity: 2010-2012. Araldica, a large cooperative in Piedmont, is a reliable source for solid wines that rarely disappoint.
