Winter Citrus Cocktails - Mandarin

Walking through the fresh fruit department of your local grocery store or farmer’s market, it’s hard not to notice the abundance of oranges piled high into perfectly positioned stacks. The genera are a plenty too. From tiny tangerines and clementines to softball sized navel oranges and tangelos, deciding which is best for your fresh squeezed pick me up can be overwhelming. What a relief to know it’s winter and these luscious orange varietals should be around long enough for you to try out a few. It’s a tough job, but someone has to do it!

From The Sea went through multiple taste-testing rounds. Clementines and tangerines work nicely, but mandarin’s beautifully nectarous flesh provides just the right balance between tart and sweet that they ever so slightly edged out the competition. Along with the juniper from the gin, the anise flavor of St. George and the richness of apricot nectar, From The Sea has multiple taste levels singing in harmony.

Named for the theory that all life began from the sea, where the nutrients we need to survive thrive, this refreshing cocktail can be sipped with the confidence that approximately 30% of daily vitamin C needs will be met. Can taking all our vitamins be this delicious?

From The Sea

Serving Size: 1
Approximate Calorie Count: 155

1 ½ oz Martin Miller’s Gin
3 drops St. George Absinthe
1 oz apricot nectar
½ oz wildflower honey & rose hips syrup (rose hips optional)
½ oz mandarin orange juice
½ oz lemon juice

Pour all ingredients into shaker and shake vigorously over ice for 25 seconds. Strain into a coup or rocks glass and garnish with a few mandarin sections.

Wildflower & Rose Hips Syrup


1 ½ cups water
¼ cup dried rose hips
½ cup honey
¼ cup sugar

Place water in a medium sized pot, bring to a boil and immediately reduce to a medium low temperature. Add the rose hips and let simmer for approximately 5 minutes or until the color of the water changes to a mild orange/brown color and the rose hip essence is released. Fine strain into a heatproof container, add honey and shake vigorously until combined. Add remaining sugar, shake again until dissolved and refrigerate for up to a month.

If you can’t find or don’t want to use rose hips, simply bring water to boil, reduce heat, add honey and sugar, stir until dissolved and transfer to a heatproof container.
