Wines of Southwest France I recently had the chance to sit down with Sommelier extraordinaire fred dec M.S. to discuss some of the great values coming out of Southwest france. Hidden away in France are many great wine regions, but few have the broad appeal and fantastic pricing that Cotes de Gascogne in particular, and St. Mont as well. We enjoyed a fascinating discussion as we tasted through four wines of the region and discussed everything that makes these wines unique and worthy of your attention. of particular notes was the ease with which Fred was able to suggest food pairings for the fun, flexible and affordable wines. Check out some wines of Southwest france this summer and treat yourself to some delicious and refreshing white wines. Unexpected yes. Worth it, you bet!

Very interesting and informative. My concern is availability.

Agree with both of Z1's points. Very excellent presentation. (The confusion in slide 7 was pretty funny.) To my recollection, I have seen one Gascon wine on a store shelf here on the left coast in my life. Yes, I bought it, and I enjoyed it quite a bit.

You need to include the reds.

Good introduction. But there are much better whites than the very famous (in France) Tariquet in the same style. The one I buy now (which I won't name as it regularly sells out before the next vintage!) and Domaine de Joy, almost as good (and what a name!). My Toulouse wine merchant memorably introduced this by saying 'yes, I have the Tariquet, or I have a another, which is better but has the disadvantage of costing less - which would you prefer?' When I tasted Tariquet again a few years later in a bar in Paris I was astonished at the difference in quality.
