I was most impressed with the remarkably delicious 2008 The Hundred Shiraz which exhibits wonderful balance and a great core of rich yet fresh fruit and the Visionario Bianco delle Venezia, which had a wonderful floral nose and fine tension in the mouth. These are wines I would have never bought on my own but I'm certainly glad that I got the chance to try them. that part of the fun and excitement you can expect with every shipment from Zagat Wine! 2009 Palacio de Menade Rueda Spain
Lemon zest, herb, heather, and mineral oil on the gently scented nose. Nice richness, with a nice lashing of fruit to buffer the backbone of vibrant acidity. Nicely mineral on the midpalate with a ripe, core of juicy peach fruit, really fresh finish, good length, a bit simple but exhibits nice mineral/zesty fruit tension with the minerality winning out on the finale. Great match for simply prepared shellfish. 87 pts
2009 Visionario Bianco delle Venezia Italy
A bit muscat-y and fragrant on the nose, with white floral and lime candy and pear undertones. Nice balance in the mouth, round and full of juicy orchard fruit with a hint of bitter almond on the mid-palate. Fresh but well integrated acidity drives the apple seed and hard pear flavors on the moderate finish. Just barely off-dry but not noticeably sweet. Very well balanced and just a fun glass of wine that would be great with shrimp and asparagus wrapped in prosciutto. 87 pts
2009 Baileyana Cuvee de Clos Edna Valley Chardonnay California
Intensely fruity on the nose with sweet pineapple fruit and gentle suggestions of vanilla and banana – moderately rich, round entry with vibrant acidity supporting pineapple, vanilla and green apple flavors in the mouth. Finishes with a soft fruity tone and nice sweet/sour balance. Intense but easy going, making this a great match for grilled Mahi-Mahi and tropical fruit salsa. 88pts
2008 Masseria Cavallo Negroamaro Puglia Italy
Big baked black fruits on the nose, plum, and berries framed by spicy briar wood tones. Nicely focused on entry, well balanced with soft tannins, and not as thick as the aromas might suggest with a nice core of slightly leathery dark berry fruit and a light vanilla edge. The finish shows a more complex, spicy aspect of the wine with notes of baking spices and cocoa joining the dried fruit tones. This would pair well with a nice mole. 87pts
2008 The Hundred Limestone Coast Shiraz Australia
Dark and mysterious with a peppery edge to the violet, coffee, soil, muskmelon and marzipan nose. This is pretty big on entry, lots of fresh, deep, fairly dark fruit with very soft supporting tannins. This exhibits excellent balance and while it fills the mouth it’s really not weighty at all. Just lovely bright, juicy plum and boysenberry fruits across the palate lead to a crisp, slightly austere backend and layered, aromatic finish with clear plum skin and cherry fruit gently framed with bitter cocoa. A really nice wine suitable for assertive grilled meats. 90pts
2008 Alma Andina Reserve Malbec Mendoza Argentina
Grilled meat, vanilla black licorice and a hint of mint all come together on the nose. This starts off as fairly soft in the mouth with polished tannins up front giving this an easy appeal. The mid-palate shows off fresh blackberry fruit with a nice spice tone that leads to the refreshing backend. The finish is all fresh berry fruit with a touch of wood spice on the finale. This would make a fine pairing for grilled sausages. 86pts
2009 Chateau Luciere Bordeaux France
Very aromatic with leafy, green tomato, smoke, caramel, red currant, real sweetness of fruit right on entry with excellent integration of acidity and sweet, supple tannins. This really shows the power of the vintage with a robust core of ripe currant fruit topped with subtle notes of vanilla and herbs. The tannins become a bit more assertive on the backend and help tighten up the moderate finish. This will definitely benefit from a few months in the bottle or hours in the decanter but is a lovely bottle of classic Bordeaux and deserving of simply prepared beef. 89pts
2008 Charles Smith Columbia Valley Cabernet Sauvignon Washington
Black currant, thyme, bay leaf, a touch of black peppery spice, layered and very attractive – smooth as silk on entry, fairly rich but not clumsy with fresh yet very sweet black currant/ black cherry fruit. The tannins begin to creep up on you mid-palate but are kept in check by the waves of fruit that echo on the backend adding a bit of wildberry/boysenberry flavor to the moderately long, succulent herb tinged finish. This is very friendly stuff that is fun to drink while remaining complex and interesting. It’s an intense wine so I would pair this with an intense braised beef dish. 90pts
