Gundlach Bundschu Celebrates 151 Years

We had an exciting time in our blind tasting this past week. While our GTi has us focused on Cabernet Sauvignon we got sidetracked just a little bit. We split our weekly blind tasting in half, with an abbreviated tasting taking the first hour and then a very special vertical tasting of Gundlach Bundschu's Rhinefarm Cabernet Sauvignon taking up the next.

It was very special not only because we were celebrating the 151st anniversary of the estate but, because we were doing it with a live feed featuring current wine-maker Jeff Bundschu tasting along with as we enjoyed vintages from 1985 through 2005! For me the 1998 Rhinefarm was the star of the line-up but the 2005 is hot on its heals and is shaping up to be a great bottle of Sonoma County Cabernet!

$21.00
Still very young but with excellent balance and real depth to the savory fruit. Give this a year or two for the soft, juicy core of mocha tinged black cherry and plum fruit to really shine.

I have to also give kudos to the star of our blind tasting!

$12.69
We've tasted this before with similar results. It's a killer value and a classic Cabernet for current consumption with excellent balance and a vivid core of wild cherry fruit tinged with mineral and herb notes and just the finest insinuation of vanilla.
