Beaujolais - For Today and Tomorrow
The affordable (cheap even) Beaujolais is age worthy and delicious - and it's the perfect addition to any cellar
For the past 2 weeks I've been tasting and talking about Beaujolais. It's hard enough to convince folks that Beaujolais is worth trying, even though it is really one of the last great steals in the world of fine wine, but now I'm trying to get people to age this distant kin of Nouveau?
Well there was only one thing to do, turn to my cellar for a few examples of aged Beaujolais and see how they've faired. Now admittedly wine 5 to 12 years old may not seem to be really aged to many, but when one considers that 90% of the wine purchased in the US is consumed within 24 hours of purchase these are positively ancient!
What to expect:
Gamay ages surprising slowly but over time typically floral and herbal notes add to the youthful fruitiness of the wines. On the palate the fruit may develop a gamy edge and nuanced Asian spice tones, and as the fruit begins to fade the mineral notes buried in the wine slowly emerge.
